Can somebody offer Hillary Clinton the Governor's job to entice her to drop out of the presidential race?

Is there ANY way in hell a Republican would resign over this? I think not- it's another IOKIYAR moment.
I also think criminalizing prostitution is foolish.
It will be slightly harder for Spitzer to find a nice cushy job as a rainmaker in a corporate law firm than it is for most disgraced pols.

If Spitzer resigns, David Paterson, the Lieutenant Governor, becomes Governor, making him NY's 1st African American governor. How's that for a harbinger of things to come? Paterson is also a Clinton supporter, BTW.

My 2 cents. He has to resign because:
a) He positioned himself as a moral crusader who was going to reform government. He's mortally wounded by the hypocrisy of this. If there is to be reform in NY he has to go.
b) This guys is not some average joe john who gets caught. He's a governor caught in a federal prostitution case. There's no way the feds are going to ease up. How much can the man get done with that hanging over his head?
c) Everyday he stays in office is another day the GOP can hit the party over the head with some moral crap. Now you and I both know that's bullshit but why go through that when you don't have to.

I never understood why prostitution is illegal. All other forms of prostitution not involving sex are legal(see Chris Matthews, Tim Russert).
I like Spitzer, and this is frakin' ridiculous. He doesn't get to decide which laws he likes and which ones he don't however. I just don't see where politicians have the time to be having sex with all these women. C'mon go home and have sex with your wives for once.

Doubtless a result of the Bush Admin.'s warrantless, wiretap activities.......
Anyway, Spitzer has to go. Can't very well sit around with a federal indictment hanging over your head.......... especially if you're supposed to be a 'crime fighter'. With his apology to family and friends, he's pretty much admitted to it.

As a NYer - and someone who actually *voted* for Spitzer (sigh), and perhaps too-optimistically believed he'd "clean up" our one-horse capitol - and who looked forward to a new day dawning without a R gov, this is a HUGE shock and disappointment.
And yeah, agreeing with those upthread who said he's gotta go, PRECISELY b/c he ran on such a crusading platform.
And, jeez...can't ANY of these guys keep it in their pants and stop thinking with their flies for a change?? You'd think they'd have learned from the downfall of their fellows. SMH

BTW, why are federal resources being wasted on prostitution rings when we got bigger fish to fry. Unless the women are being trafficked, this stinks of the Bush administration's anti-sex policies. And I wouldn't be surprised if some Republican bigwigs in the same prostitution ring weren't even revealed because the US attorney only wants to prosecute Democrats.

He will have to resign because he's built his career as a law enforcer. And as stupid as the laws against prostitution are, they are the law at the moment. I like Spitzer, but he isn't some random private citizen.
The good news is that, in the unlikely case Bush's creatures used domestic wiretaps improperly in this case, Spitzer is going to go after him tooth and nail, and won't rest until he's sitting in a cold cell. You don't fuck with Spitzer (hookers, on the other hand...)
First Jimmy Wales (not prostitutes, just a Fatal Attraction type nutbar), now Spitzer. A lot of very smart high profile guys thinking with their dicks these days.

"NBC's Tim Russert raised the Farrakhan issue at the debate last week, asking Obama: "Do you accept the support of Louis Farrakhan?"
"OBAMA: You know, I have been very clear in my denunciation of Minister Farrakhan's anti-Semitic comments. I think that they are unacceptable and reprehensible. I did not solicit this support. He expressed pride in an African-American who seems to be bringing the country together. I obviously can't censor him, but it is not support that I sought. And we're not doing anything, I assure you, formally or informally with Minister Farrakhan."
"RUSSERT: Do you reject his support?"
"OBAMA: Well, Tim, you know, I can't say to somebody that he can't say that he thinks I'm a good guy. (Laughter.) ... I have been very clear in my denunciations of him and his past statements, and I think that indicates to the American people what my stance is on those comments."
"Hillary Clinton tried to draw a distinction between how she and Obama handled reprehensible, unsolicited support."
"CLINTON: .. I'm just saying that you asked specifically if he would reject it. And there's a difference between denouncing and rejecting... I just think, we've got to be even stronger..."
"OBAMA: Tim, I have to say I don't see a difference between denouncing and rejecting. There's no formal offer of help from Minister Farrakhan that would involve me rejecting it. But if the word "reject" Senator Clinton feels is stronger than the word "denounce," then I'm happy to concede the point, and I would reject and denounce."

Seitan--tell me about it.
Apparently, he was IN some of the fleeping wiretaps.
Asshole. Horrible.
And apparently the girls got $5.5 K an HOUR.
FIVE GRAND AN HOUR.
I don't think the human body-or bodies--can EVER do enough to/for ANYONE to warrant that kind of money. There are not enough orifices/extrusions in the human body of any and all genders to warrant that.
If I won the lottery tomorrow and it was legal, I would NOT spend $5K/hour for (let's say) wild hot sex with Dolph Lundgren and several of his twin bros, even if they were tireless, had tongues normally associated with certain Madagascar chameleons, and were endowed like draft ponies. And made a great Hot Toddy. And fed me sushi and wiped me down with nice, hot minty towels between escapades. And...and...hmmm...maybe if I talked em down to $4K an hour for three or four of em at ONCE...but I digress...
..no more chance of a President Spitzer...meh...

There's an old line about the money you pay a prostitute not being for the services, but for her to leave quietly at the close of said business and remain quiet about it after.

Spitzer is stupid and it's hard to defend stupid. If you read the criminal complaint (at TPM), he obviously used the call girl service before and was planning on using it in the future. It's his belief that he thought he could get away with it that bothers me along with his hypocrisy.

Again not having ever played in that league... but having played with pros... it is a matter of fantasy and fulfillment. You definitely get what you pay for...
I have often said what someone above said, you pay for them to quietly and discretely leave not for the sex. Spitzer got caught from wiretaps and email surveillance not from the escort or service not upholding their side of the deal.
The FBI was the responsible party in this... I am so glad they are busy protecting us from rich guys and working girls instead of breaking up terrorist rings inside the United State. Sure must be easier working on a high level call girl ring than busting meth labs.
