Hubris, where the fuck are the professionals when cases like this show up? Are they just shoved aside, threatened and/or told to fuck off when they try to handle it right? Or have they just resigned in disgust like all those JAG officers?
Or maybe that's a dumb question after what happened to Valerie Plame.

Well, it's not as if the FBI had time to do boring, nit-picky stuff like checking the hotel records to find out who occupied the room before Higazy. The guy's an Arab, fercrissakes! What more did they need to know?
Obviously, you guys hate America.

Sorry to double-post, but I forgot to ask just what in the hell a terrorist could do with that radio, anyway?
Make threatening broadcasts to planes flying overhead?
Talk an airliner traveling 400+ mph at rooftop level onto the target?
"Down a bit. More to the right -- I mean left, dammit! -- a bit more ... a bit more ... Ok, Abdul baby, you're in the slot! Bring it on home."
Riiiight...
Besides being morally repugnant and unlikely to unearth the truth, torture encourages sloppy thinking and downright stupidity.

Here is another story of that type that I heard from a man I met about four years ago. An Australian man, born in Egypt arrived on a flight to New York. The airport security people there were suspicious of him because of his appearance. They were also suspcious of the large tattoo he had of a cross on his arm, telling him that all Egyptians were Muslim.
He tried to explain to them that he was a Coptic Christian. He tells them that he was buyer for a clothing chain back in Australia and was in New York to check out the fashions and maybe make some purchases for the chain. He also said that he had a friend working in the Australian Consulate in New York who could verify his information.
Anyway, they don't believe him, take him into custody and was allowed to make one phone call. He called his friend in the consulate and they were amazed when this friend came and so he was able to get released.
I don't know anything else about this case, but I can say he was quite angry telling me this story and vowed never to return to the US. Part of his anger was that it seemed the idiots denied he could be a Christian. And yes, there was a prominent cross on one of his arms

Apropos of your closing remarks back on 12/26/2005 - it'll be a blizzard in hell before I, personally, step forward and voluntarily divulge information to the FBI after this. About ANYTHING.
Why? Really simple: they have a name for torturing people. I don't want to rise above the radar horizon of people who torture informants.
I'd be willing to lay some serious money on the proposition that I'm far from the only one.
The FBI has wrecked its credibility with many of its potential internal American information sources. By torturing Abdallah Higazy.
That's what cutting corners buys you.

As I said once on another 'board, to a self-proclaimed Randroid (my term) who was nonetheless at that time vehemently pushing the war, and the torture of any Muslim who got caught in the net:
"Not that I would ever do this, but give me restraints, some pliers, a power drill, waterboarding equipment, some hydrofluoric acid, and an electrical kit, and I guarantee that I could make you confess that you were the pigeon who made Mary heavy with Christ, and mean it too."
(He being a rather vehement atheist, also.)

LOL.
That's the only thing that torture really is good for. Making people confess, whether they're guilty or not.
Of course, if you're actually trying to get some traction on actual criminals, you're SOL with this approach. But, like I said before, that's what cutting corners buys you.

I hope against hope that Higazy gets some sort of justice for his thirty odd days of false imprisonment. I hope even more strongly that the "nowhere" men down in Guantanamo have their rights restored before they die.

A nice coda would be for the real "nowhere men" who put them there and then proceeded to torture them, to get to sample the pleasures of life in Supermax until they die.

Sour Kraut, Bush has already caused us to lose half or diplomatic core. We've seen record numbers of resignations up and down the fed. We may have lost some of the people that could have ensured that torture wouldn't happen. Bush's people don't care why they go, just that they go. We'll be hearing more of these stories. :-/
