Whee! I must go out and buy more vodka and snacks (popcorn, cheese and crackers). With any luck I'll see McCain's head explode.
I'm very much of the "Destroy-the-Village-to-Save-It" school of GOP Party politics.

I'm disappointed we never got to see a full-on public screaming temper tantrum from Bush (though - heh! heh! - there's time yet!), but I'll be more than happy to see McCain make up for this by throwing one himself! Har! Hee-yuck!

Quick question: Is it pretty much a given that this little story was leaked/caused by/came about due to the efforts of some of McCain's fellow Rethugs? Tee hee! Isn't that funny? Isn't that silly?

I'm getting damn worried that this criminal enterprise called the Republican Party is having a convention in my city next summer. These people have the manners of cannibals and none of the subtlety. John McCain may regret his getting W's blessing to run as the rest of the Rethugs gnaw on him.

I have to give props to Huckabee.
Talk about having game, he's been quietly positioning himself playing that ignorant southern Barney Fife too-stupid-to-know-when-to-get-out routine to the hilt while waiting for the moment when scandals and god only knows what else was waiting to be sprung on McCain.
Crazy preacher he may be but he knows how to play and that in many ways makes him a potentially more dangerous opponent in the fall than dumb-ass McCain.

Oh, make no mistake Balto, Huck might not be intellectually titp top (though I'd bet my rent he's smarter than Bush) but he's crafty and street smart like no one's business, if you read some of the stories about him he comes off as a hyper-christian cross between LBJ and Clinton, seriously he know everyone in a ropeline, speaks noteless on the stump, etc.

I don't usually go in for paranoia, but this story, full of holes, in the paper that recently endorsed McCain, seems to be rallying some of the crackpot-right mouthpieces (Limbaugh, Ingraham) to McCain. It's early going yet, and maybe my antennae are just tuned wrong, but something's vibrating strange.
Also, if this turns out to be a poorly sourced, innuendo loaded, sex-based non-scandal, could it help Clinton by reminding voters of the Lewinsky mess? Could it hurt her for the same reason?

I don't think that the Times cares who it hurts or helps... they just got a scoop and the attention of the world to their little bit of the media circus. What is that worth in the world economy?

"And I doubt the Times would run with this story without sieving this through multi-layers of lawyering to cover their asses post-the Jayson Blair/Judith Miller fact-check gaffes."
"My guess is that they're dangling another shoe off the end of their ink-stained foot. They've got more. Probably ugly stuff they're waiting to spring like a bunny trap. If McCain keeps biting hard on that “They're lying about me!” carrot, and then pulls the string—he's liable to drop the trap's box (more facts, supportive of the original claim and then some) right on his head, trapping him, damaging him, and quite possibly scuttling his campaign. A-gain."
-I think the NYT has something on Maverick; to go this far against a Senator, they have to have SOMETHING.
(considering their screw-ups in the past)
If the NYT is wrong, they're TOAST.
If the NYT has damaging info on McCain, Mr. "Straight Talk" is COLD BUSTED.
Pass the popcorn...

I wanna start seeing the Obama-Huckabee match up polls. This story is not going away for McCain. It cuts right at what he cast as his unimpeachable integrity.
If this was Obama spinning favors for his gal pal he'd be toast.

Yeah, if this a Dem, particularly Obama, the shit-storm would be fierce.
Nevertheless, LM is right. THis was just the first shoe to drop. I suspect there is an entire "Imelda Marcos Shoe Collection" waiting to land on McCain's head.

what wengler said.
Obama and Huckabee are both valid and interesting stories in this cycle. And yes, Huckabee is NOT going away, he doesn't need to. For as much as I find his Flat Earthishness totally appalling (see: creationism) I do appreciate that he's waiting for "straight talk" to self-define itself into something...uh different.

While my wife and I were out running errands yesterday, we listened to some of the radio commentary on this.
Eventually, I turned to her and said:
"You know, dear, if a John McCain sex tape ever shows up on the Internet, you have my absolute word that I will NEVER, EVER, watch it."

John McCain sex tape? That's just vile. But I think I'd rather politicians were getting actual blow jobs then metaphorical ones.
