I strongly doubt that our "moral authority" has meant very much to anyone in most of the Third World, or anywhere in the Americas south of the border with Mexico, for some decades now. If ever.
We lost our cherry very, very quickly after we started to become serious players in world politics.
Which happened before my parents were born.
Do a Google search on the following pair of words.
"funston torture"
But don't start reading on a full stomach.

Not really, it went about in 2001 when in response to 911, America lost it's FUCKING collective mind.
There was a moment when the whole world was pulling together, when sworn enemies banded together to fight and make things right, then America lost its funking mind, and went into Serial Tourturer/Killer mode, and only now is starting to look back.
And that Brothers and sisters is when it went

What real moral authority did we EVER have, considering that we got this country by murdering the natives and stealing their land?

Bravo to this young women for having the courage to speak up.
When I was a paramedic, I treated hundreds of people -- mostly women, but some men -- who were sexually assaulted. For her to be stuck a quarter of a world away from home, guarded, and threatened... and now years later to be told nothing can be done to bring to justice the men who raped her. *sighs* At least she now has the comfort of telling the truth and no longer hiding in the shadows.
In this season of the holidays, it is appropriate to think of all the many Americans who believed the United States was going into Iraq to bring Christianity to the heathens. Christians believe God literally came to earth, manifest physically in the body of Jesus Christ.
I believe the rape of this girl is yet another of too many recent perfect examples... the physical manifestation of the Bush Republican credo of loot, pillage, and rape the entire world to their own ends by fucking everyone else over (in this case literally), while perverting the legal system to get off and escape punishment, no matter how evil the crime, act, or damage to our constitution. And then attacking viciously and personally anyone who dares say they are evil people doing wrong.
We are worse than the Saudis with their punishment of the Girl Who Was Raped when she was in a car with a man (her former boyfriend) not of her family, who took her somewhere else where she was then gang raped. (The punishment was originally 90 lashes, then 110 more on appeal, for bringing the media into the case, for a total of 200 lashes. The men had their sentences increased from months in prison to years.)
The Saudis at least claim to have a moral basis for the evil they commit. The Bush Republicans have no morality, just sociopathy.

I know, Mr. Bill.
History tells us what a facade our "moral authority" was--an is. But there's a difference now.
Before, we pretended that we weren't that way. Uh-uh, we're not like those rotten Nazis, no sir. Sure, we tortured, raped and killed, but it was done in secret because we didn't want anyone to know.
Now? We don't care who knows. Waterboarding is legal, y'know?
And, if you ask me, that's worse.

Somewhere along the line, we started not just accepting violence of all sorts, but actively embracing and celebrating it. We love violence, we encourage violent people, we enshrine violence as public policy and cheer when our own government brutalizes the innocent.
Hence, Iraq. Hence, the drumbeat to Iran. Hence, rape apology and torture apology as our new national pasttimes. Hence, the police's taser fever. Hence, Jena. Hence, cheering as thousands of people die in New Orleans.
I think we're living in a society run by and for psychopaths.

Interesting use of the word "loophole," as if the lack of legal control over contractors in Iraq were some sort of accidental consequence.
As PE used to say, "Don't believe the hype."
That shit was planned, and I'd bet the farm, the baby, the bathwater, and my kidneys on it.
And I'm not a betting man.

-I get that same twitch when someone tries to tell me how bad Saddam was.
He was our homey until he went against our perceived interests.
We backed HIM in the Iran-Iraq war of 1980-1988.
We KNEW what type of man he was and WE BACKED HIM.
Fuck the Bush Administrations, both of them!

I am a 61 year old vet. Yes I remember that "other" so similar war...now I will be leaving my beloved, false faced America. It is not what we have been told/sold. I hope to hang in until after the elections...

“One quick google reveals that there are already websites that are calling her "rape bait" because she is pretty."
gag, these "people" need to be fucked with a rusty chainsaw
and this crime is just the perfect example of right-wing philosophy, which, according to Drigtglass, is "FUCK everybody but me"
but really, after torture at Abu Ghrabib (sp?), is anyone surprised?
