Obama said he isn't in favor of gay marriage. You think he's just saying that for political reasons? Or is Michelle just more progressive?

We had the same assumption when Bill Clinton took office.
Beware of thinking a President can or will truly change things by some magic.
The magic is between us, good ol' We the People. We make justice and equality happen ourselves, with our every choice.
Why not just trust that? While reminding politicans of the necessity, of course.

if california defeats the constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, then it will stand in california. that means that the full faith and credit lawsuits will be happening all over the country and it will be impossible to defend. even this court cannot, in good conscience or anything resembling good faith, overturn loving v. virginia which would be the applied precedent.
even scalia and thomas would have to see that shit clearly.
i'm telling folks that we need to keep the turnout high here in california, that we not only cannot stand to have another republican in the white house, we have to stop them from turning back our clocks to the bronze age, this one's important this time.
obama would not have to support or defend gay marriage, he would have to support and defend the constitution.

"Beware of thinking a President can or will truly change things by some magic."
this one did by some kind of evil magic for sure. I guess I meant, that when the man at the top make it ok to say whatever damn dumb racist, sexist, homophobic thing that comes to your head we all suffer. Haven't you felt in the last few years that this kind of stuff has been getting worse again-- not better.
I don't think Obama or anyone can change it without us. But their is a tone that is set from the top down as well. And if you are trying to lead like a dumb bully--- dumb bullies come out of the woodwork somehow, feeling like they are validated for their BS.

Obama is for civil unions and equal treatment. It is not 100% of what I want but it is better than we have now.
And he is against a gay marriage amendment to the constitution and that is a relief.

Frankly - and respectfully, TLG -- No.
Not "worse" -- simply more visible. More plain. More plain that these dumb, sexist, racist, homophobic crap things are what have always been said in our Western Civ history.
More plain, and more painful, when the man at the top speaks the darkness that has been our society's underpinnings all along.
"Worse"? Well, it's a challenge to maintain equilibrium and equanimity. But "more"? No. This is just private stuff made public.
And we can't start cleaning up the filth until it's visible; just as we can't start to heal a wound until it is examined.
Racism and sexism arise from appalling wounds in the human psyche. I find it more meaningful to focus attention on the source of the wound, than to run from the stench of what oozes from it.

"Obama isn't in favor of Gay marriage."
I know. It's a point against him, just as his support for immunity for the bushCo telcoms, is several BIG points against him. It's disconcerting, to put it mildly.
We need progressive leadership; not more goddamn "triangulating".

Obama never was all that progressive -- just slightly more than Hillary. The Media picked Hillary and Obama for us -- we didn't get to choose from the full --what was it? nine?-- candidates who ran. If Edwards had received as much media exposure as the other two, he might well have been the nominee by a large margin. Or maybe any of the other ones.
Obama is too corporate for me to really like, but the charisma is good, and any Dem would be an improvement on Bush and the Bushites.
But politicians are the leaders who "see a parade going by and get out in front of it and say 'this is my parade'" as Thom Hartmann says. So if we make that progressive parade very big and very loud, the politicians will get out in front of it and lead....
