Gravatar thanks jen. i've been trying to come up with something to commemorate and honor gilly's memory. unfortunately i'm far from home right now, preparing to descend deep into the l.a. canyons to immerse into musical process with some dear friends.

now, you've done it perfectly, this shows anything i would try to write as nothing but flaws.

yes, indeed, take care of yourself.

and yourselves.

Gravatar Yesterday I was making my barbecue spice rub for chicken before I even realized what today was, and I thought about Gilly's food blogs and how awesome everything he wrote about sounded.

I've always thought of the afterlife as the "Defending Your Life" model (as in the movie), where even if temporarily, you can eat what you want and it doesn't affect your health.

Gravatar Minstrel,

Don't be so hard on yourself--I'm sure you could write an amazing piece!

In the meantime, remember Gilly in your song and songs...and thank you....

Gravatar Jen: Hugs to you. Hope there are not too many troubles with the super, and that those trilobites that were living in your bathroom have moved on.

Thank you for not doing a ham "food" posting

Gravatar Thor,

There is a permanent ban on "Men with Hams" here. Alas, that was an inside joke between Gilly and I; it just wouldn't be the same without him...

Gravatar Thanks for that wonderful remembrance, Jen. And to the Doctor, Sara, and Jesse for the remembrances below. And thanks to all of you for keeping Steve’s legacy going.

Gravatar Hi Jen,

It is good to see your name at the bottom of a post. I hope you are well.

Myself included, many have not forgotten Steve and may he rest in peace.

And I dare say Steve would have supported the Democrat that won the nomination. Other than that, who cares?

Gravatar Steve Gilliard, simply put, was my blogging hero.

Blunt, funny, sometimes terse, sometimes controversial, sometimes frustrating, but always with an original take on something. He knew what he was about as a writer. I can think of no higher compliment.

We were about the same age (and would still be, were he alive). His death shook me badly.

Amazing, for somebody I never met or knew.

Thanks for the memories.

Gravatar I don't remember the specific problem I was having but I do recall becoming really frustrated after having purchased a Mac back in 2005. For some reason I e-mailed Gilly for advice and he responded; he didn't have to but he did. I follwed his advice and the procedure was immediately successful.
Gilly brightened the world for all his readers and I am grateful for his having been among us.. Today, LM, Sara, Jesse and Hubris Sonic proudly carry on his work--THE BEST DAMN BLOG OF THEM ALL. Thanks to them and to the regular commenters here.

Gravatar I never met the man but I felt a great deal of sadness when he died. I am not his family and I knew I was very angry and sad. It is still too hard for me to really think about it or even really read about it. I hate to think how al the folks who were very close to him are dealing with this.

I was honoured to read his material aond comment with him from his Netsalves days.

Gravatar well if it's any consolation jen, you must know what a huge impact steve made on everyone in blogtopia. he was especially kind to me and my blog, and he was generous with his advice and time and links to the smaller blogs, something that is sorely lacking amongst the bigger blogs today.

what i'm trying to say is that even tho he's gone, he still lives on in people's hearts everywhere.

he was a class act and i am hoping you are doing well these days, and that you know that he made such a difference in so many people's lives.

Gravatar Amen to the health lecture and amen to the indoor BBQ recipe. Love to you Jen.
The tone of your message says you are doing well. That's great. Maybe it would be OK to say that this year Steve might have been backing the winner. From early on. But who knows. He seemed much more interesting on food and history than on predictions. I do so miss his nasty commentaries about the personal advice columns. In fact, I can very much imagine that had he lived he would inherit the mantle of Anne and Abby. Not that the advice he gave, or that he in fact criticized, was of any particular quality, it was just so entertaining.
I could never figure out how silly or serious he was being. I'm sure the two of you had some laughs over that. I know I had many.

Gravatar Jen,

Thank you so much. There are so many days when I read the news and wonder "What would Gilly say?" He was always insightful, but never predictable. His wisdom is greatly missed . . .

Gravatar Love & Respect & Peace - YOUR HIGH HOLINESS

Gravatar Jen: So good to "hear your voice" again. I remember your posts last year when you were juggling Steve's illness, health problems, and horrible living conditions. I am pleased to note that life seems to have settled down for you and I'm glad that you're doing well.

I'm one of those persistent lurkers who rarely posts, but I can't tell all of you enough how much I appreciate your powerful, provocative posts. I teared up while reading each remembrance of Steve. All of you should be very proud.

What I remember most about Steve were his posts on the Transit Strike (masterful reporting) and his constant shining of the light on Ken Blackwell. Since I lived in Ken's home town, I would periodically send links about Blackwell to Steve and I was thrilled when he used one of them in a post. Ken has crawled back under his rock for awhile, but I'm sure Steve won't let him out of his sight!

Bless you all...

Kathleen from Cincinnati

Gravatar Jen - so glad to come here and see your signature type gracing the front page. A great food post!!! Perfect. Thank you.

You be well and check in more often if time allows. Always great to hear your voice

Gravatar Thanks, Jen. Stay well. Us too.

Gravatar I remember when my wife and son came back from church that Sunday last year...... trying to explain to them why I was crying for some guy on the intertubes who'd died. She understood.

Gravatar Thanks, Jen. It's good to "hear" your voice again, even if only virtually. I never met Steve yet it's scary how much I miss him. He was a mensch.

Gravatar When I saw the magenta color of the type at the top of the post, I thought 'COULD IT BE??'

From a (mostly) lurker, it is great to hear from you again, Jen, and that you are doing well.

Keep on keepin' on.

Gravatar love to you, Ms. Jen. thank you for everything.

Gravatar Thanks, Jen, for that beautiful and heartfelt remembrance. I'm going to go home and do a bunch of situps tonight, if only for Gilly's sake. None of us lives forever, but there's no excuse not to keep ourselves in good shape so we can live longer. I need to take some weight off so I can be around when my little guy has children of his own.

It amazes me how much I miss Steve. I never met the man, but I miss him. I miss his voice, his anger and outrage and passion. He was an inspiration. I wish I could write like Steve, but all I can do is write like me as much and as authentically as possible. I need to work on that, too.

It's really good to hear your voice again, Jen. Never met you either, but as soon as I saw your telltale magenta (?) font, I I felt like an old friend had dropped by the house unexpectedly. Be well. Thank you for everything you do and everything you did, and for being there for Gilly.
