I'm doing my part to lower rice prices by not eating it. I've never liked it in fact. It is the highest caloric yield per space farmed though, so it is probably the most important world staple.

We in the US might think that China is barbaric with their one child policy, but a population that is unable to be fed is probably one of the biggest promoters of security instability in the world. I suppose this rise in food prices is going to push more capitalist investment in third world agriculture which will rise the price of fuel even more and put a lot of people out of work. Oh well...we will have a lot more poor people unable to afford food.

Gravatar wengler, it is worse than you think. the capitalist investment in 3rd world ag is WHY people are going hungry. To pay huge loans to 1st world lenders and to make loads of cash, big ag promotes growing commodity crops for export... subsistance and private farmers are either driven off their land or forced by economic conditions to grow the big cash crops. Less family farms. not able to grow a diverse range of crops. Farmers out of work and living in shanty towns outside more urban areas fighting for limited jobs. AND now not able to grow food for their own people.

that is what causes 3rd world hunger.
