Another laser-like zinger.
I remember watching Dukes of Hazzard on a TV like the one you mentioned. Big ol' brute of a TV that took a minute and a half to warm up (helped us kids learn to count big numbers as we waited for it).
The Eagleton clock is running...but will McCain have enough fingers left to stop it?

LM - As usual, brilliant post.
There's something that I've been wondering about a lot since the Palin freak show was annonced and that's this:
How do you think the big GOP money brokers (i.e., Wall Street) are taking this? Obviously, conservative business is more than willing to use the fundie nutjob block when it's to their benefit (financially or in obtaining power). However, I don't think they EVER intended for the rubes to get THIS CLOSE to the brass ring. As much as the snake handlers want to convince people, they aren't the power brokers. No way, no how.
So, how do the real power brokers feel about this, I wonder? And can they do anything about it....

Palin's old business partner, the one named by the National Enquirer as the other party in Palin's alleged infidelity, has filed a motion to seal his divorce papers.
Bring the fucking pain!
Your usual brilliance is on display. My god it gives me shivers.

There's a lot of serious comments to be made, but I'll leave those to others. For now all I can say is holy shit! Rick Dees! To a kid growing up in Southern California, that is THE voice of the 80's. Wow. I forgot about him. Off to the youtubes!

Hey, you're describing MY tv. It even has rabbit ears. Except mine has buttons instead of a dial. Oh yea, and mine doesn't have a remote. No channel surfing from the couch. Oh, and it hasn't been turned on for over 6 months...
I watched the convention on my computer instead.

Now it's coming out that Palin had access to her brother-in-law's personnel file (which was supposed to be confidential). The smell of abuse of power grows ever stronger, and her lawyering up at the behest of McCain's fixers just makes it obvious that she, indeed, has something to hide.
No wonder the campaign isn't allowing anyone to interview her (unless it be very carefully screened shills for AP and Fox). They'll wheel her out to big venues and pull her string so that Bullshit Barbie can smile and cackle for us.

They got nothing. Nothing.
And not even our MSM can help them hide Palin for two months. There are still enough newspeople left with a vestigial conscience (Like Campbell Brown and Keith Olberman) who will be pointing out that the GOP's Jeanne D'arc is being hidden in an Alaskan privvy.
The State Trooper's Union in Juneau is already ginning up an investigation into her efforts to get her ex bro-in-law fired, with the possibility of criminal charges being filed.
A lot of shoes waiting to drop.

With you so absolutely on the GOP's need to defenestrate the hool who greenlighted the "community organizer" slap. While it was delicious red meat to the base, you do not start a political pissing contest with people whose jobs typically involve four traits:
1) access to good phone lists
2) access to detailed maps
and
3) lots of chattering all day long.
4) fear about making ends meet
These are the people who, instead of calling their mother to remind her to vote, will march with clipboards for 4 miles with slush in their shoes in swing-state cities like Milwaukee, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Minneapolis, etc.
Their friends in social work schools are just starting the semester, and they probably arrived at class, nursing cheap coffee, exclaiming, "Could you believe the nerve of that b_____?" While probably 90% of social work students were probably leaning Obama, when you implicitly threaten both the livelihood of community workers by calling them irresponsible AND joke about killing unemployment in the next speech, you are begging for a bitchsmack from them.
It's the equivalent of Biden sneering that Wal-Mart greeters or janitors at megachurches are shiftless.

Did you invent "Caribou Barbie"? If so, you need to trademark it. Hilarious.
I can absolutely believe you convinced your poor sweet little brother that someone on TV had six fingers. (grin) Re Phlegm Thompson, the night after he spoke Letterman ran an on-screen counter showing how many times he cleared the crud from his throat. Letterman also nailed it when he said Palin looks like the woman in the Lenscrafter ads -- EXACTLY.
She was a beauty pageant winner (and if you don't think that teaches you how to bury the bodies, remember how many murders have originated in those arenas), became a petty tyrant mayor by way of looks (and perhaps sexual favors), used corruption and End-Timer connections to become governor of the 45th smallest state in terms of population, and never even kept track of the messes she left behind because hey, that's not her job.
McSame is/was counting on the fundie vetting process being done by someone was smarter than the folks who create their own signs for rallies and conventions: FAIL. You can always find out where the rats are hiding by following the trail of turds, and small-town loyalty will not survive against the kind of digging that's begun.
Here's the thing, though. A guy who crashed four (or was it five?) fighter jets but never apparently learned how to accept his errors and correct them, a guy who can't get past his POW years, earn his own living or remember what property he supposed owns -- he could not face the prospect of losing this election all on his own. He despises women enough to yoke one into his campaign so when OBAMA IS ELECTED, McSame can blame it all on the gal. Or the fundies who make him take her. Another flyboy who's never once in his life admitted error.

"They got nothing. Nothing"--Tanbark at 1:17
The reactionary GOP manipulators have never HAD anything, but that hasn't stopped them, except when the Democrats have nominated someone who knows how to keep the "rednecks"--working-class whites, that is--from feeling "dissed" [Carter, Bill Clinton]. They're really sensitive about being "dissed", to the point where they reliably put the avenging of perceived slights above their pragmatic interests when Election Day rolls around. LM displays his usual brilliance, but the more y'all try to cast Palin as "white trash", the more the "rednecks" will rally around their "pit bull with lipstick"--and they're still a very large group.
The real audacity of hope in the Obama campaign is the audacity to hope that the "Urban Archipelago" has finally grown so large that it can elect a president all by itself, and so its inhabitants can deride the "rednecks" to their hearts' content, without fear of electoral retaliation.
Maybe it finally has done that--the latest map on electoral-vote.com finally shows that Obama is doing better than Kerry was doing on this date in 2004.
2008: 301 Obama, 224 McCain, 13 tied
2004: 270 Bush, 252 Kerry, 16 tied

Ironically, it was his work with the Great Mississippi Flood as an organizer that made Herbert Hoover the 1928 gop nominee. But that was back when people thought that being intelligent and competent was a plus in a nominee.

As I watched this past week, it kept reminding me of 1992 when Buchanan, Robertson, etc., launched a culture and religious war on national tv. Back then, I knew that The Religious Right and the 1992 GOP Convention was going to cost them the election. The same thing will happen this year. It may win them the base but other voters will reject the extremism.

Just to clarify one point to a question from up comments a ways: "Caribou Barbie" was coined by Mike Malloy, I think.
LM, you have nailed the sentiments so many of us are obviously feeling. I really hope the press does its job for once and really is relentless on her ass. I was a bit dismayed earlier today when I saw a Yahoo news headline that read: 4 Out of 10 View Palin Favorably. WTF kind of headline is that happy talk horseshit? Wouldn't 6 Out of 10 View Her Unfavorably be the real story coming out of this ridiculous week? Why does AP hate America?

Barry Crimmins came up with a good title for Palin: Nanook of the Nazis. (Or try the female equivalent: Nananook of the Nazis!)
"How do you think the big GOP money brokers (i.e., Wall Street) are taking this?"
It's an interesting question. Are they writing off 2008, and waiting to reorganize & run against the Dems in 2012? If McStain loses - especially if he loses big - he can blame the Christopaths for the loss, so he'll be happy. But they all need the illusion of the religious freaks being a gigantic and unbeatable bloc, don't they? So that'll be damaging to the Rethugs in the long term...Hmmm...
Or maybe the Big Money Boyz are as sick of the American Taliban as we are? Probably, but that doesn't mean they still don't need the snake handlers as ready stooges.

It is clear to me and maybe others in the
prog-blogosphere that Palin is nothing more than a blow job betty on the make for an SUV with shiny rims and a toxic McMansion. She profiles like many a school principal or real estate broker. You blow girl. Gotta get paid somehow. Which is why she pulls in the dirty old downtown merchant and faded lady of the galleria vote. Lawd, I wish there were shots of her flashing her tits at a Nascar race. That would surely cinch the Nascar dad and Rosy Palmer vote.

Short version: At a restaurant shortly after Obama clinched the nomination, Gov. Palin allegedly told a crowd of colleagues, "So Sambo beat the Bitch!"

Wonder when the 'McCain/MILF 08' bumper stickers are going to show up. The word 'serious' has absolutely no meaning for these people. As I stated in a previous thread, they aren't running a presidential campaign. They're auditioning for the Gong Show.

so true... but the trouble is, much of the US thinks they are voting on the Gong Show too.
I really think many Americans think the Presidential elections are just entertainment and they are voting for the most entertaining candidate. Palin may win.

I'm with Jen and Kim C. - I won't feel secure until after the election is over (hopefully with Obama as the winner).
I've heard from people who were disgusted by Palin's speech and have researched all the info about her and are ashamed that she's on the ticket; but I have also talked to people who praise her from the heavens and think she is the greatest thing since sliced bread.
There are many, many, many low-info voters out there who will see her pretty face and wide smile and her Down's Syndrome kid and think she's harmless. They won't do the research on her nutty, extreme-right views and how she's wrecked the Alaskan economy. They think she's harmless and think she's "cute" or a "babe."
They honestly see all the attacks on her as someone being "picked on" and we are already seeing people rally to her side because the "mean liberal media" is being nasty, sexist, etc. with her.
As Kim said, there are people who see Palin as entertainment. They will vote for her because they want to have a "hot" VP. Remember, a lot of people voted for Bush because they thought he was a "regular guy" who they could have a beer with and who preferred talking about sports over politics.
I know some will dismiss me as a worrywart, but the last eight years have shown me that if just enough people fall for something it causes disaster for the rest of us.

My old TV was a little thing from the mid-80's that I gave up for the switch-to-digital upgrade. The new TV itself doesn't receive digital signals so I still need the converter-box, but I figured I would use the occasion to retire the old one because who knows how much useful life it has left? I didn't get one with a digital tuner because I had an opportunity to get to get a bigger, hardly-used regular TV for a very good price.
That Levi Johnston kid is actually kind of pretty now that he's lost the mullet and discovered the safety razor, but I'm sure he still ruins the effect every time he opens his mouth.
Here's some background on the culture that produced Sarah Palin, from John Dolan of The Exiled (the infamous nihiliistic periodical banned from Russia and slightly renamed in honor of its relocation to the Western Hemisphere).
