Gravatar Thank so much for the links to the great News Blog recipes! I'm very happy these will continue...

Gravatar Thank you so much for getting together and giving us another place to meet and discuss. I was hoping that my favorite writers and commenters from Steve's place would do this.

The past month has been so sad and difficult...I'd click into the News Blog several times a day to see if there was an update and to see if there was any news about a site like this. I got you from Drifty, so I thank him too for spreading the love.

As far as cooking today, I plan on ribs on the grill, some cole slaw, some pinto beans and I do have to say I like the idea of pasta salad. I love that, but never remember to make it as a side for grilling. I've got a watermelon chilling and if I get really inspired, some cobbler or a nice fruit tart could appear too.

I thank you all again and can't wait to hear your voices again. There is just too much important stuff going on in our world and the perspectives I gained from the likes of each of you are just so valuable.

Gravatar Are you guys planning any football/soccer posts (to continue a fine News Blog tradition)? I'm sure that Steve would be tickled pink to learn that Sven-Goran Eriksson will be managing in his beloved Manchester.

Gravatar abogato, please do tell, if the cobbler makes the table. and the chilled watermelon has my mouth watering...

Gravatar Enjoying the food blogging coming back...however it looks like the kid in the picture is enjoying a Canadian hot dog

(JM Schneiders from Kitchener Ontario - same city as Bob & Doug McKenzie's "Strange Brew")

Gravatar due to the monsoon conditions it's not looking like much in the way of cookout weather here in TX.

and the fact that the landlord has had a big-ass land-yacht parked in front of the grill for the last 8+ months doesn't help either

Gravatar All kinds of food today. My favorite part is the homebrew Rye IPA and Blonde Ale.

Gravatar I'm not sure. It's at someone else's house.

I miss pig pickings since I gave up, well, eating pig, but soaking chicken in salt water with sugar and white vinegar and red pepper added to it overnight in the fridge makes grilled chicken which reminds me of it a little.

Gravatar I was in the US for Canada Day, and am back in Canada for the Glorious Fourth. So I'm meeting myself coming and going.

Mr. R has to work late, so there will be no grilling tonight. Number One Daughter turns 17 today (yes, born on the Fourth of July -- her brother was born on St. Pat's); but we canceled her party after an act of gross stupidity last night.

So I'll enjoy the smell of your virtual hot dogs (can't get Hebrew National here, unfortunately, but at least the local organic burgers are beyond nirvana), think of sweet corn on the grill, and remember the taste of my mother (decidedly mayo'ed) potato salad. I could still maybe chill a watermelon and fry up some chicken, though.

BC Democrats Abroad is having a picnic at Jericho Beach tonight. We'll see.

Gravatar Please say that, in addition to a dead tree collection of Steve's blogs, there will also be a cookbook! Oh, YUM!

Gravatar Hamburgers must be eaten with mustard only. Ketchup only in a pinch. NEVER, repeat, NEVER, eat a hamburger with mayo.

Gravatar pat, them are some strong words 'bout mayo! so I guess you are against mayo on french fries?

Gravatar I followed up the Wikipedia link to Low Country cooking, and was delighted to have this new bit of culinary history. Thanks.

Several branches of my family go back to Charleston (most of the Scots-Irish in America came through this port or Philadelphia). Most of the food described wasn't familiar -- but I was surprised to see an old-line family favorite: hoppin' john. Geez. Mama's hoppin' john and homemade cornbread were a favorite filler, hot and warm on cold winter nights.

I had no idea that was a Low Country legacy. Kinda neat to know my mom was making a dish that her ancestors had probably been cooking up since the mid-1700s.
