John Howard only wishes he had the quiet dignity, gravitas and intellectual prowess of Shemp Howard.

Interesting times in the south pacific, Rudd speaks fluent Mandarin. Howard spoke fundy white guy dog whistle!
I think Rudd will quietly tell Bush that the Aussies want out of Iraq ASAP but let bush claim some sort of victory to save face! This is the beginning of the end of the special relationship as Aussie looks east to the rising powers. The sun is setting on the american empire, we have seen it befor as colonies of the Brits.
This is also a generational shift, Rudd is the new face of australia, smart outward looking.
Electorates also just get tired of the same face for 11 years or so, US founding fathers had it right when they limited the amount of terms a president could serve! Now that is worth giving thanks for..

Actually, the founders only established a tradition of a President not serving over two terms. It was not made a law until 1951, when the requisite number of states ratified the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution. This resulted from a Republican reaction to the four terms of Democratic President F. D. Roosevelt. [He died early in the 4th term and Harry Truman became President.]

I look with some favor on the legal requirement of all eligible Australians to vote or face fines, but I don't think it'd work well here.

Gawd, Wanderer, there are about 25-30% of Americans who should be FORBIDDEN to vote.

The schmuck lost his own parliamentary seat, too? Good. They're sending him all the way home.
Under his regime, Aussie people of color haven't necessarily felt at home in their own country, adopted or otherwise. Bad enough there's that history regarding the racist treatment of the aborigines. Now it's this tawdry episode.
I agree, not that Howard.
I usually interpreted his yelps as eeeb, eeeb, eeeb, eeeb, eeeb, eeeb, eeeb, eeeb!!

Rudd has already told Bush that if he was elected, about 1000 of the 1500 Australian troops will be leaving Iraq during a meeting in the US some months back. At least some of the 1000 or so leaving will be redeployed in Afghanistan while those still staying in Iraq will just be for guarding the embassy and protecting the diplomatic staff.
Iraq actually had little to do with the elction outcome. Probably the biggest issue was Howard's weakening of labor laws which was done without mentioning it during the preceeding election. The changes were amongst the biggest in 100 years. Climate change was also an issue as the current drought is the biggest on record and has been associate in part with climate change. Food prices have gone up something like 20 to 30 percent in the last month or so, not good to have while an election is in progress.
While I am not at all a fan of Howard, he was less of a poodle to Bush than Blair. Bush was not happy when Howard had most of the Australian troops leave Iraq shortly after the end of the invasion in 2003. A couple of years ago, when Bush visited and addressed parliament, the very next day Chairman Hu of China did the very same which I heard ruffled some Bush feathers.
Maxine Mckew who I hope takes Howard's
parliament seat, is no airhead. She can be quite merciless in interviews and is always very sharp. Not at all a Katie Kuric type character.

Jebus!, some nobody ex-TV personality beating the hell out of the sitting Aussie PM, with a strong economy and no sex scandals.
You're sure? after 12 years, there must be something in the closet.
12 years is a long time....
