"Crawford v. Marion County Election Board is a major decision that could change the face of American politics for the very negative unless the Democratic Party decides to fight for its voters on every level."
-Well, that settles it...we're fucked. :-(

Have to agree with Admiral K, the dems for the most part do not seem to want to
fight.

I suspect the moderate and conservative Democrats fear that if they got serious about voting rights, that might bring a bunch of unwashed left-leaning characters into the Democratic Party, taking that party leftward, and worst of all, maybe even winning.
The mod&con Dems would prefer to have the Repugs running [make that ruining] the country than lose control of their party--and maybe even have actual leftists end up running the country and raising taxes on the affluent.

We just got the 21st century version of a poll tax imposed on us by the corrupt Republican enabling court.

Amidst the doom and gloom, would this maybe constitute a small ray of hope?

Why doesn't the Democratic Party just organize busloads of voters to go get voter id cards?

Hmm, maybe an adopt-a-voter campaign. Your $35 will buy an ID card for a voter who doesn't have one. Cross-reference registered Democrats with DMV records. The Dems who don't show up on the latter go on the adoption list (the GOP can look after registered Republicans if they really care, which they probably don't).
I have no idea how to organize this, but state Democrats at least should have access to do this. I'd happily adopt a Hoosier or two anyway.

bjacques, great idea. One way to get this going... search around and see if there is a dfa group in your area who would take this on? AND we should all write about this idea to Moveon.org this is exactly the kind of grassroots action they would gladly support, OR give us ideas on how to get it going.

It could get worse. SCOTUS has another decision upcoming on Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act. Section 5 "mandates pre-approval for electoral changes in areas with histories of racial disenfranchisement [...]" (TheHill.com):

If the Roberts/Alito/Scalia court rule they way I fear they will, the potential for GOP mischief will be staggering.

For a completely different take on the meaning of this decision (a more optimistic one) read Brad Hicks' article on it. It's short:
