Gravatar but, but, you mean adding the Email This and Print This functions aren't at the top of the list?

Well, I thought they were great ideas...snff sniff...

oh well. I'll just wait in line...

congratulations y'all - this blog mends broken hearts...

Gravatar Terri -

There is an Email This function already there.

If you can't see it, email HS directly please.

jwe

Gravatar Terri --

It's the little envelope at the bottom to the right of the word Trackback.

Click on that and it will automatically email the post to whomever you wish.

Gravatar We need a haloscan search and archive (ya that will be easy) or baring that, a localized comments system taht allows for a search. some of the best stuff is in the comments...it will eb a shame when haloscan takes a dump and loses them all.

Gravatar I'm assuming that you are using some variant of the Blogger templates. Could you post the technique when you get it working?

My blog is mostly short posts,

Gravatar This is the second place I go in the morning (blogwise). Drifty is first, then off to GNB. I admired everything you guys did during Steve's illness, and the new incarnation hit the ground running. I can't imagine these sites start up THIS good all the time. Y'all can "aw shucks" and dig your collective toes into the carpeting all you want, but in my opinion, you have put together a really good, entertaining, informative site, with some wonderful writing and a great span of subjects. Kudos!

Gravatar moonglum and other professional IT geeks (myself, I is one) --

Both HS and I are professional IT people. We back up Haloscan.

I just did so about 60 minutes ago, before I read your post. It's a routine matter. We might lose a few days, even a week in an extreme case if both of us are out of town or otherwise not available. But I assure you, we're NEVER losing the site. Not to worry.

And yeah -- we're working on search for both site and comments. We'll see how it goes. Everyone's clear what is needed in search. We will see; no promises. All of us involved have full-time jobs and we are NOT going to throw together a kludge. This has to be massively reliable and replicatable across a global network. We have servers and clouds we talk to from a datacenter in Tokyo to Seattle to an Amazon cloud to the Google cloud...

We're not, just to pick a for instance not at random, going to download the comments locally, then split the search query so half goes to the local comments while the other half goes to the non-local posts. Not going to happen. We will search-spider data where it lives, not make local copies. The stuff changes in real time way, way too much for us to do otherwise. We're not screwing around with cached copies as primary data sources. Na gonna happen. *smiles*

Again... we're very competent at distributed large scale systems. Both of us do it for a living. We're just waiting on some hardware to show up, and we'll see what we can do. Patience my friends. Patience.

Gravatar Matthew --

Perhaps. Our technique is likely going to have a hardware component. If what we come up with has a software only fix AND it isn't something we -- and by we I mean HS -- isn't going to sell the technique (might be a business), then yeah, probably.

Again, no promises. Ask again once we've got it working. If we get it working. Heh.

Gravatar honestly my big worry is hosting the comments at haloscan. how the hell dose that palce stay in busneiss...why are we storeign comments on remote servers run by a third party....who the hell is liverack LLC anyway??? how do the y make money as hostign comments for a lot of major blogs must chew up space.

hell live rack dosn't even have itsown data center, they rent server s from "the planet" (large ISP) ...at least I hope the rent servers, a much worse situation may be thatthye are on a virtual server or just beign hosted on a server farm....its a low cost host ($3 a site) runnign from a PO box in georgia...it screams fly by night host those appera and disapera over night( i know I ran one for a year or so).....

Gravatar You all are doing a wonderful job.
I love coming to this blog!
Keep up the good work.

Gravatar The site is great, you guys have fun with all the technical stuff!

PS- More emoticons in the comments would be fun.

Gravatar Yes, everyone here is doing a great job.

Gravatar COOL!!! Thanks guys! Little easier on the eyeballs not jumping back and forth so much

I was camping all weekend for a bluegrass festival which ended with a deluge of a rain and lightening storm. Quite spectacular! Just catching up.

Here's a story caught my eye..... for the cooks out there. Commando Cooking warning I'd say! :D

You're all doing a beautiful job!

Gravatar I love this blog. It fills up some of the void left by Steve's death. I'm so grateful for your efforts.

Gravatar Now's a good time to tell you,
thank you, thank you, thank you.

You're doing a wonderful job.
I'm grateful beyond measure.
This blog makes me smile.
I check in every day.

Gravatar I love you guys. You were all important voices at Steve's place and I know iF you had started this a year ago, Steve would have been so proud of you and would have supported this site any way he could have. It would also have been added to my daily list of reads.

Thank you!

Gravatar Not for nothing, but re: your header, and relying on my small amount of expertise on the subject of all things Firesign, I'm pretty sure it's "glycerin Vibrofoam."
