i wanted to do a very clever thing
where i offered myself up as an arms dealer in the pie fights. each word in the comment would have been a link to a pie recipe i've posted on my blog, but those no fun jerks at haloscan bounced me for having too many links in the post. help yourselves to these recipes they are all country proven.
(hint, try the shaker lemon pie if you want some absolute heaven)

Pies? Here's a story about pies.
I used to live and work in Juneau Alaska for the National Marine Fisheries Service. My job meant traveling to Seattle and points south every few weeks for meetings and that sort of thing. There's only one airline between Seattle and Juneau (Alaska Airlines) and the schedule, especially in winter, is often inconvenient. While there are nonstops between Seattle and Juneau if you were unlucky with the schedule you'd end up on the 5 hour marathon "milk run" which would stop at Ketchikan, and Sitka before finally making it to Juneau.
If you didn't have a first class upgrade, food was usually pretty meager on the way up. And in the winter there were never any tourists, just regulars...business folk, fishermen, and government workers for the most part. Everyone knew everyone for the most part and knew how to get food.
At the Ketchikan airport it was popcorn. People would bounce off the plane to get fresh popcorn.
However at the Sitka airport it was pie. Some of the best pie I have ever eaten anywhere. The baker who works at the Sitka airport restaurant has to be one of the best pie bakers in the country. The Sitka layover was always just long enough to dash off the plane over to the restaurant to ask for pie. At which point the cashier would usher you to the back room where the pies were stored on big racks. Apple, Strawberry-Rhubarb, Cherry, Peach, etc. There was always a mad dash from the plane to the restaurant to snatch up boxed pies and under most seats on the way to Juneau there'd be a pie. Sometimes someone would buy a couple extra and give them to the flight attendants for serving and we'd have fresh pie served on the plane.
I was always partial to Strawberry Rhubarb and would always end up with one under my seat on the way home.
Since I followed my wife to Texas 5 years ago I'm still searching for pie as good as that served in the Sitka airport and I've not yet found anyplace in Texas that is the equal.
Anyway, by way of introduction, I'm a 44 year old male native Oregonian and former marine biologist now teaching HS science in Texas and raising 3 girls with my wife.

sure libertarian leaning liberal (or liberal leaning libatarian...i baskicly want the goverment to stay off my back and get on the back of big busniess) I'm probably the youngin here but getting old enough to no longer safly clam that (31, this is the first year that i wasn't the youngest member of my IT team...it was a shock). been in IL my entire life now in cenral grew up in northern and somehow talked a passadena girl into joining me out here. she got me back by talking me out of my "no more then two" stance with kids, three boys and a girl on the way (and assuming the doctor didn't lie to me, we are done )
oh and i love keylime as well.

Pecan pie! Followed by pumpkin pie. I was a picky eater until few years ago, and I never wanted to try pumpkin until I read in Mondo2000 magazine that it was a smart drug and a pie! Didn't make me smarter, but I'm damn glad I tried it.

Living in Texas I have come to appreciate the importance of warm peach cobbler. Most definitely. However good peach cobbler should not be polluted with Breyer's. The only proper ice cream for peach cobbler is, of course, Blue Bell "homemade vanilla". Accept no substitutes.

So...how many of you out there are really starting to feel the pinch of inflation? I know I am, and when someone like me is majorly aware of inflation for more than just one reason, you know it's getting bad.
Other than at the pump, I definitely feel it when I load up on milk. Wow. With 3 girls and a wife who all drink milk we sure go through a lot of it every week. I usually buy organic and probably spend over $100/mo just on milk these days.

Breyers is no longer the all-natural local Philly product that you probably remember.
Breyers is now owned by the giant Dutch conglomerate Unilever which has seen fit to "improve" on the classic Breyers. First, by shrinking the classic 1/2 gallon ice cream tub to a svelte 1.5 quart carton which they sell for the old 1/2 gallon price. And second, by adding Taro Gum as a thickening agent. Being in Tokyo you've probably missed the great Taro Gum controversy. Here's some info from the Daily Scoop, an ice cream blog

Blue Bell is still a family-owned and run operation in Texas. They own all their own cows and are so obsessive about quality control that they do all their own delivery driving and grocery store freezer stocking so no "untrained hands" have touched the ice cream before you pull it off the freezer shelf. That's one reason they haven't gone national. They don't want to outstrip their own delivery system. They are an absolute Texas institution but apparently haven't spread out of the south yet so you northerners may not have been introduced to Blue Bell yet. I had never heard of it before moving to Texas.
Sure you can find lots of super-premium ice creams around the country in those pretty little pint containers. But if you want an honest 1/2 gallon tub of ice cream (yes Blue Bell still comes in 1/2 gallon tubs unlike the other big corporate brands) then Blue Bell is damned hard to beat.

Actually eggs are still astonishingly cheap. Not long ago my mother was telling me about raising eggs on the family farm in Pennsylvania in the 1950s. Growing up as a girl in the early 1950s she packaged hundreds of dozens of eggs a week as her after-school job on the farm which they sold for 5 cents each or 60 cents/dozen.
These days I still see eggs in the grocery store for less than $1/dozen. That must mean that on an inflation-adjusted basis eggs are many times cheaper today than in the 50s.
I'm not sure why eggs are still so cheap compared to other farm products. But they really haven't seemed to have gone up like everything else.

Feeling it bad. Would love to sell my home but the market is bad and no one is buying. I weigh every purchase and ask, "Do I really, really need this?" Won't buy it unless it's an absolute necessity. My job situation is good but my consumer confidence is in the toilet. Thank you, Bush.

Ok, seriously, I was born in the exact middle of the Baby Boom, 1955, the year Charles Laughton's film Night of the Hunter hit the theaters.
Raised and spent most of my life in Nashville. Cinephile and MST3K fan. Long-standing love affairs with sf and fantasy, mythology, folklore, Oriental literature and samurai flicks, graphic art, history, science, and politics. Very definite Anglophilic streak, which would probably annoy my Scots-Irish ancestors no end.
Avid hiker, boater, and nature photographer. Married, with no children, one dog of indeterminate but extremely shaggy breed, and three cats: a Turkish Van male coming up on his 15th birthday, a male Maine Coon Cat who may be about 3 (all of our pets are rescues), and a small, middle-aged tortoiseshell who has the males completely subjegated.
Taught myself programming in my early 30s, dBase in all its variants (starting on a Kaypro 10, no less), C, C++, and some other weird shit nobody remembers. Currently making a living with Java, SQL, JSP, HTML, JavaScript, etc. Mostly GUI design, but I also get to do some back-end coding with Java.
In sum, as a lyricist I admire once put it, "A much-outdated remnant, of a much-outdated style."

my Daddy used to take his little girl to the local ice cream parlor in St. Albans and I will never forget the black and white checkerboard floor and the deep voices of the men talking about the real world and treating 'the Rev's' little girl like a little lady, a princess and an equal, all at once...
so you can see why I love the memory of Breyers...

Loveandlight inflation is the reason i moved to the armpit of america...I can walk to work, clsoe to farms, cheraper houseing...and picked a college twon so my kids can get a good education (and the twon is rather liberal as central IL gose). about 3 years ago I jsut couldn't see how suburbia was goign to be sustainable for my family.
kent: as much as i despise the mans politics, i have to admit that oberwise makes damm good ice cream.
Ok how many of us are IT geeks...remember PHP and MySQL web applications for dummies desk refferance is a GREAT book, you all need a copy or five 
when my next one comes out I will makes sure to push it as well (we are in tech edits right now, PHP secuirty book for adison wesly)

I recall that time that I said to you that this country's other defining sin along with hypocrisy is narcissism. I guess you are actually more intimately acquainted with this fact than I am! I would suppose that's because I've always been pretty low on the totem pole, but at the same time you don't have to be very much higher up than yours truly to start encountering some pretty serious levels of rot and stink, I would imagine.

in the interest of keeping a very fun open thread going (all this good stuff and no trolls, gotta love it) since you were talking about home brewing experiences i thought it would be fun to post my ginger and root beer recipes. i got clean and sober fifteen years ago, and i take my soda fountain seriously.
if you've never tried the real home article of these things let me say, you just don't know what you've been missing. folks back east (especially western pennsylvania) also do some good stuff with birch beer but home made root beer will have you thinking that you've cheated yourself your whole life.
i agree that blue bunny is the superior ice cream of the moment. but, i'm a country boy who is mostly inclined to serve somebody a root beer float where the root beer and the ice cream are home made. that's how we roll out here in the sticks. besides, when it's a hundred and twenty degrees outside and the nearest grocer is a twenty minute drive, storebought ice cream just isn't an option.
