the whole coalition thing has been a joke from the outset. it has never been anything but a u.s. operation. that countries like poland are refusing to pretend anymore (and the payoff of missle defense placement might piss off the russians to a place that makes it unattractive and provocative rather than preventative)

more and more they are beginning to refuse to pretend with us anymore.

I think it is a combination of two factors.

1) many foreign publics are vastly opposed to helping out Uncle (or Gringo) as he bumbles along in Iraq; Uncle's singular way (or the highway) approach in Afghanistan exacerbates both the foreign disillusionment with US military skill and endangers their soldiers their; hence, they gotta take from Paul to help out Peter while making Mary a bit happier;

2) no one wants to be around when the "big bug out" commences in the land of the two rivers. Most, if not all, the "allies" in Iraq lack even the most basic heavy lift. During the bug-out, I think they assess (correctly) that they could find their precious troops WAAAAAYY down the priority list and perhaps left on their own to escape

Oh, wasn't Poland the country that signed up to host missile defense base in their country? Oh yeah, they were. Given that stick in the bear's eye, why wouldn't they want their boys on the home turf?

Besides, based on the lowered expectations peddled by General Superstar Patraeus and his White House overlords, we already achieved VICTORY in Iraq...
