I think we've "pacified" Mosul more than three times... Googling "mosul operations" brings 1,050,000 results...

"We are seeing a more stable environment," said Oberstleutnant Mikael Goebler, oberkommandant of the 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry, which operates in western Stalingrad. "Have we made a turn yet? No, but we're really close to it.
The Wehrmacht attributes the decline to several factors, including the Hiwis' increased willingness to provide information about partisans and the growing presence of the new Hiwi mercenary forces throughout the country."

Oberst is colonel.
Oberstleutnant is lieutenant colonel.
If Michael is Koch in the German, I stand corrected.

Michael in German is Michael. There is a women's name as well Michaela.
So am I to assume that the Tal Afar strategy was implemented in Baghdad but not Mosul?

The disconnect between strategy and operations defines this clusterfuck.
Tal Afar, Baghdad and Mosul may as well be on separate planets as far as implementation of strategy is concerned.
Thanks for the info on the "Michaels."
Cheers.

I thought we were trying to affect an highbrow discussion of the idiocy of the futile US efforts in Mesopotamia.

What is there to say in a High Brow discussion. This is mostly farce. It would 100% farce, except too many people are dying.
The right has been dying to crow about the decrease in violence. Not because they care about "the troops", or the Iraqis, just so they can be right.
and the pentagon will say ANYTHING.

Agreed.
I can't believe this genocidal horror has been blessed with the faith and credit of the people of the United States of America for this lo these five years.
My comment about highbrowism was entirely in jest/farce.
Y'know, because of the format and all.
That's why I compared it to Stalingrad.
It's less serious in terms of mathematics but far more reprehensible in terms of the sheer ignorance and brutality of a nation that must know better.
Our Lt.Col.'s should look in the mirror and see Oberleutnants.
Instead they see revolutionaries.
Sickening beyond the ability of the conscious human mind to comprehend.
It makes me want to scream.

Yup...
It so completely ridiculous. One one hand they have told us time and time again, "We have crushed AQ in Iraq". but now, the reason we have to launch a new large scale offensive in Mosul is ? ? ? Yes, thats right. AQ in Iraq...
feh..

Yup...
AQ in Iraq.
Justification for a new offensive.
AQ in Iraq.
Which didn't exist before we created it.
Feh...

::chuckles:: "Koch Goebler." Naughty people ...
I don't see Stalingrad, however. Hubris, you were apt with the Whack-a-Mole metaphor. To steal a phrase attributed to Mao, "The revolutionary swims among the people as a fish swims in the sea," and that's what the insurgents are doing.
We surge into an area, the insurgents melt away except for those who elect to stay behind and fight rear guard actions. We declare success and leave, the insurgents come back to find that their ranks are now swollen with new recruits who didn't much appreciate foreign soldiers kicking down their doors or maybe dropping 40,000 pounds of bombs on their town.
If either Hillary or Barack get into the WH in November and they withdraw the troops unilaterally, I'll nominate either of them for the yiffing Nobel Peace Price.

Baghdad is drowning in sewage, thirsty for water and largely powerless, an Iraqi official said on Sunday in a grim assessment of services in the capital five years after the US-led invasion.
If it smells like shit...
