Hubris, the very fact that McCain is th e nominee is enough to wonder about the health of the Republican Party. True, they have a prescedent in Reagan, but Ronnie was the picture of health compared to this guy. They couldn't find anyone younger to run? If it were the Democrats faced with a similar situation, somebody would come out early just to see if maybe this is really their time. Republicans have a system where people line up behind each other and run, even if logic says that they need somebody else.
But it also shows the Republican's fundamental problem both generationally and talentwise. Younger cohorts are simply too liberal to buy into all of the fundie talking points, even if they agree with the military and economic ones. They don't vote Republican: they certainly aren't available as candidates. The Southern Strategy has become a noose-around their necks as they can't recruit, fundraise, or otherwise expand the party for fear that the redneck base will walk away, and take the fundie base (almost the same) with it. The problem is that both bases are shrinking and aging rapidly, used to being passive voters. So they can't make up for what they aren't getting elsewhere either by tapping this base either in money or GOTV anymore.
Which is why we will probably win this one.

I said it in LM's post on HRC below. But, I think it bears repeating here:
And as for November? Young vigorous 40-something representative of America's diverse, tolerant, united future? Or old, cancer-scarred 70-something, representative of America's divisive, fearful, angry ancien regime? It's no contest - it should be no contest - and if it turns to the GOP, then there can be no better proof of the collapse of our republic in both practice and spirit.

And for the record, I am DAMNED tired of politicians of ALL STRIPES parading themselves in war-zones for the sake of looking STRONG and COURAGEOUS for the cowards back home.
Besides the obvious hypocrisy of presence in the war zones without doing something back home, these visits distract from the mission and burden soldiers already overburdened.
I'd prefer they stay home and vote the troops' return to the United States.

The VP Candidates:
1. Crist? Lowered taxes in Floriduh with the help of the Yahoo crowd, guaranteeing a level of services that will keep people there pig-ignorant and happy for years to come. Besides, the Base has suspicions that he's gay.
2. Jindal? Fiscally and socially conservative, but from a notoriously corrupt state and the Base will not like him. Brown skin, y'know.
3. Romney? I wonder if they've switched the Mittbot's OS to Vista yet. The Base are still suspicious of him as a heretic.
Keep looking, Johnny-Mop.

This situation with Romney and Jindal illustrates the problem for Republicans both electorally and ideologically. Both politicians seem to be reasonably acceptable, both in age and ideology. Their Democratic equivalents would be on at least the long list of not only VP candidates, but also have a real chance to run themselves as the party standardbearer. Obama runs as our candidate. They have no Republican minority Senator or Congressperson, and hardly any women either. A Republican answer to Obama won't come until later this century, if not the next, that how far behind they are on this issue. This hurts them by making them increasingly uncompetitive in wide swaths of America, unable to field candidates that at least have a chance of winning. Younger cohorts are too diverse to fit in the Republican party very well, and there's far more of those than the descendants of the frat-rat crowd.
They therefore, are doomed to a Southern base until the Reagan Democrats finally pass off the scene. And which is why McCain is their standardbearer, despite his age and probable health issues because of it. They can't go much younger than him and find someone the base will accept until the base itself changes.

So, he's going to choose mitt for vp as he rolled out his new "tough" campaign today after they all left "Sedona".
Had to read from palm cards though so it was a bit jerky of a go. Went after Obama on the farm bill and going to make Congress' pork barrel his center piece. AND going after that young, inexperienced Obama, who he "really respects". It had all the fire of a wet match.
Thank you for your service Mr. McCain. That's about all I got.
Hey, maybe one of them thar vortex thingeees will open up and swallow him whole. Oh wait, that requires he have energy. Nemmind.

If we didn't like Mitt the first time around, why is he coming back as a dog returneth to its vomit?
Not only NO, but HELL NO on Romney as VP. He's too slick and he hates women.
