Gravatar now HS unless the setup a rather large wirless mesh network we are dealign with serious lag time...dependign on teh resolution of the images it could take 2 - 5 min to transmit over nondirectional radio eithernet, same with long range LOS microwave, there is WIFI but it depends on the range.

it would eb best to setup a mesh network, but then anyone would be able to access it

Gravatar my understanding is that it was taking more than 5 minutes... much more...

Gravatar Putting aside the network latency issue, imagine the labor it would take to monitor the full 2000-mile length of the border 24/7, let alone assess and respond to incursions in a timely manner. Throw in the corner-cutting ways of the GOPers who push these initiatives and the kind of defence contractors they hire to implement them (on display in this article), add in some very motivated hackers, and you have yet more expensive security theater.

In 2008, the only way a border barrier works is: if its length covers a far more limited and manageable area (500 miles maximum - perhaps twice that if the country is more concerned with keeping its citizens in than with keeping non-citizens out); if it's consistent in strength (if not materials) and monitoring stations across its entire length; and if it is operated by a dead-serious government that considers border integrity an existential matter and allocates resources (generally military or paramilitary ones) accordingly.

There's a reason why this magical border fence with Mexico is only taken seriously by the kind of nativist dullard who joins the Minutemen.

Gravatar HS...5 min +. they are using a sat connection. slower then dialup.

OTB the idea here is to not be monitoerd, but ot be an early warnign system, so that humans can be deployed more effectivly.

alnog those lines its a good idea, but done horrible. it should skip the pictures, go with radar and sismic censors...don't worry abotu the folks on foot. deal with the cyotes adn drugrunners in offroad vehicals.

Gravatar "OTB the idea here is to not be monitoerd, but ot be an early warnign system, so that humans can be deployed more effectivly."

Automation can only do so much in these situations. Even with only radar and seismic sensors you still need well-trained staff to make assessments and judgements about deployments. Consider the kind of cut-rate people DHS hires (as you once said, their pay is way below market), and take into account the length of the border, and you're looking at a lot of waste and inefficiency. It's a very small improvement on the current situation, purchased at a highly inflated price to the American taxpayer (sort of like post-Saddam Iraq).

"don't worry abotu the folks on foot. deal with the cyotes adn drugrunners in offroad vehicals."

That makes a lot of sense, but this whole fence idea (and they're calling it a fence or wall, not an early-warning system) isn't being sold to sensible people like yourself. It's an expensive and half-baked sop to nativists who really believe that the individuals and families on foot are more of a danger to America than organized criminals.

Gravatar Yes, indeedy.

Our Tax Dollars At Work.

Gravatar Got nothing to say about your post, You really got an awesome informative blog, would you mind if i ask you for a link exchange? Regards...

Gravatar It took the GDR 45,000 security personnel to stop the flow into West Germany.

US-Mexico is 2 1/2 time as long. So a 110,000+ member security force with walls, razor wire, guard towers, spring guns and minefields could stem the flow.

Basically a force equal to US ground forces in Iraq. It will also come with a similar price tag.

Gravatar hey no argument form me OTD...as i have stated (from personal experience) DHS pays 10x less then the going rate. so yes, untrained bottem of the barrle types are runnign this mess. Never sadi this wall was a good thing, in fact teh whole mess was impalmentd horriblely (we ahve seen that a lot in the last 8 years).

but in theory a border sensor gird is a good idea, as long as you under stand its strenghts and weaknesses, keep the scope limited and impalment it effectivly it can eb a very good security measure

Gravatar If they are running power lines then you'd think that they could run some fiber too.

Oh well. NAFTA teaches us that capital should be free-flowing across borders while labor should not be. A capitalist's wet dream to be sure. They get to have it both ways. The legal cheap labor of the border factory and the illegal labor of the easily exploited border crosser. This is how billion dollar fortunes are made while the vast majority just barely scrape by.

Gravatar OT, sry:

Acquitted! All three! On all charges! WTF???

Gravatar That’s $20 million of tax money well spent - for Boeing. Consider it the consolation prize after they lost the Air Force’s $40 billion tanker contract.

It looks like a Borg chimney sweep; maybe they can sell it as an add-on to the Roomba.

Gravatar national pretend crisis

Gravatar These guys can (and have) fuck(ed) up a wet dream. Just last month, sitting in Newark international airport I was graciously shown the key code for the maintenance door to the tarmac. I bet that code doesn't get changed this year. No "special" hitech gear, no billions of dollars spent, just th cost of a plane ticket and keeping your eyes open.

The key to doing good surveillance is having good intel, and making intelligent deductions from the information you have, combined with good training and experience. Of course luck helps, but what is luck, other than "...what happens when preparation meets opportunity"?

We've already comprehensively ruled out anyone or anything connected to the gop. (new descriptive nickname: "goop").

Gravatar "maybe they can sell it as an add-on to the Roomba."

priceless

Gravatar Chertoff accepted it so Boeing could get paid. You think he didn't know it didn't work?

Gravatar Say it does work. It's still a stupid idea. The agents aren't going to be able to apprehend all of them no matter what, and at some point, they're going to be chasing a false negative. Plus there are plenty of ways to trick cameras and sensors, or you can always break them, and leave the agents having to repair them constantly.
