Yes! For those of us only watching on TV it was still a glorious moment. I still tear up when I think about it. For the first time in decades I felt a glimmer of hope, a lightening of the heart, the possibility of real change. Not hype, not BS, but a solid presence of the people and the leaders working together to make the changes this country - this planet - needs to survive.
I was inspired by what I felt was Obama's mandate - that each and every one of us must participate in creating a world we can thrive in. The next question - one I hope you at GNB - and the GNG readers - will be focusing on - what do we do right now to make that change happen?
Thanks for everything. All your posts. Your presence.

I note the Reverend Fred and his peckerhead pistoleros have opted for a twenty-year old, MADE IN JAPAN, Toyota as the-ride-of-choice for their hatewagon. :o)
I say John McCain, Inc. should be appalled at this slap in the face to Ford, GM, etc., and their red-white-and-blue stockholders.
I mean, our troops are dying in Iraq to bring the sweet message of Jeebus's love (and to help them with the correct disposition of their oil) to the ungrateful Mesopotamian wogs. The very least that these fine americans could do is NOT use a vehicle (which usually has a half-life of about 200,000 miles) and instead, would express their patriotism by hate-pimping-out a Ford or Chevy of similar vintage...if they can find one. :o)

NEW MEME: Use it, spread it.
This country is a MESS. Obama is being put to an impossible (it seems) task: Fixing stuff that the Powers that Be insist CAN'T really be fixed.
He's got a Herculean task ahead of him.
Now for the meme:
Black Hercules.
Obama is the Black Hercules.
Think about it, use it, spread it.

i spent "acceptance night" with my family. my mom, and two sisters. we marveled at how things have spun through.
dawning of a new time. and yes, we've gone from the best thing a man like barack obama could expect from life is a job in "the big house," to where he is very likely to sit at the head of the table in that house.
i am amazed. and frightened. some of that's my old indin genes. i never can forget that our few victories were what provoked our biggest defeats. red cloud's winning his war is what spelled the end of the ogalala nation. cochise's winning is what provoked the response that devastated the chiricauhua.
i pray that's not what happens here. i am working toward that end. i want the next "first" to be the inaguration speech of President, Barack (not barry) Obama.

Amen, LM.
I stayed up late (made me a complete pill at work the next day), but I stayed up and watched the whole thing, then watched it again over the Web the next night. Each time I did I teared up as I realized that this man stands a very good chance of becoming President of the United States, and that our chances to turn this thing around are growing fewer.
But there remain two months before the election of 2008, and I wonder what new smears the GOP has in hand.
O!, I can only surmise you refer to the "Reverend" Fred Phelps in your comment. Otherwise, blow me.

Oh, I had the thought when he took the stage at Invesco...look at all of those people - that sea of people. Please don't let anything happen...
I hope that your hope is right, because I find I am afraid to hope, about anything anymore, because the kick in the teeth hurts a lot less when you assume it is coming, eventually. I'm white, raised in a family with 50% Georgia cracker makeup, and I know how loathsome many of my brethren are - not the hood wearers - the ones who snicker at them and secretly wished they, too, had a hood. I expect that even if he is at 75% on November 3rd, I will be up late the next night, probably vomiting in sheer terror, waiting for the other shoe to drop. I can't see me getting past this until he takes office. These fuckers have drained the life out of me.
And on a lighter note, was it absolutely necessary for us to state that Mrs. R. was supposed to pinch something other than your hand? I mean, DUH! And she seems so smart...

Jen, I'm afraid that when I read "Black Hercules" all I can think of is the scene around the table in "The Nutty Professor" where Eddie Murphy, made up as an old lady, claps his hands ridiculously and chants "Hercules! Hercules!" Not such a good image. Damn you Eddie Murphy!

When Obama wins, I want to start playing the entire "Fear of a Black Planet" CD on infinite loop, loud, pointed at the crooked cop bar on my corner (which really does usually have yellow-ribboned SUVs with pro-Bush stickers on it). It'll be a fucking scream. I may have to do my own mix/mashup with NWA's "Fuck the Police" as well. And no, they DON'T do anything about the domestic fights, knife fights, or weed smoking that go on outside the place because THEY are the ones doing it half the time. But I digress....

Dawn. That looks about right. Thanks for the image that sums it all up.
(Poor you. means you were on the red-eye. Oy!)
I only lasted as long as Gore's speech, which was on at 3am here. I wish he'd shown that side of him 8 years ago, but we're not fucked yet so he didn't arrive too late.
Happily, CNN replayed Obama's speech a few hours later. Each speech is better than the last.
My impression of the DNC crowd all week: One nation under a groove. At the RNC, there's no joy, just the fading hope of a last chance to drag the liberals down the toilet with them.
We stay focused and we'll do fine.

Just back myself from an odyssey, a 5 day fest in the Sierra Nevada's.
And so I missed the speech last Thurs, LM, and JUST listened to it last night in a youtube . . .
What a moment for reality.
Love your post LM.
You captured it all to the keyboard.
Like the pic of the sunrise in Philly.
You capture the moment.
Yer pretty fuckin Grand in yer own bad self way, ya know . . . nice writing.
And many thanks for sharing it with us all. Yes, there's hope, now. And many thanks for sharing YOUR hope with us, too . . .

Embarrassing charades like the installation of pitiful cardboard cut-outs of neo-negritude, such as the cipherous Clarence Thomas and Condoleezza Rice.
Can I quote you on that? Went down smooth like a 12 year old Scotch. Peaty.
Overall, your best yet.
I'm not done being afraid for Obama as well as all of the rest of us, because there are still too many hateful and crazy asshats in this country...but I think an inauguration could cure me.

Love your writing, LM – sweet and strong. It is one of the biggest reasons I keep returning to this site.
Being of that certain age, too, I find my hopefulness tempered by the cynicism which has emerged since 2000. I am less afraid of something happening to Obama than I am of our country’s electoral system…I can’t imagine what I will do if we are not successful this time. I am almost afraid of being hopeful; the brass ring has felt close like this before, only to be just out of reach. I am afraid that the lies and innuendos in Palin’s speech last night (and the others I heard from the GOP convention) will sway voters away from doing what is right yet different to what feels more comfortable regardless of the implications of their actions.
Maybe it is just that Obama and the direction he would like to move America (while still not as progressive as I would like) feels too good to be true…

Christ! You go on too fucking long, LM. I was bored to tears, first by Barry's speech, then by this self-stimulation you call a blog post. You've been took by a fake brotha in an empty suit.
