What I think the Clinton camp is is not above using America's longstanding issues with race in politics.

Of course. What was Bill's Sistah Soljah moment but a deliberate attempt to show that he knew how to keep black people in line.

FWIW, Obama has a problem, getting nasty with Bill is like wrestling with a pig. You both get dirty, and the pig loves it.

Gravatar never understood the whole clinton as teh "frist black president" bs...he has never known hardship in his life (I guess a tiny bit but it was all selfinflicted). HE has never know exclusion, he has never been accused purly by the color of his skin.

I relise I don't have it as bad as african americans, but I stil get it...I get teh acusatiosn of shopelifitng by walking into a store...the cop allways haveign you due the perp stand for rutiene traffic stops. the not so subtle "your not who we are lookign for" at job interviews (even though your fucking resume, unfaked reads exactly like the job ad).

clinton has had nothing but privlage his entire fucking life. everything was handed too him (don't try dropign that bullshit self made man crap. his step dad owned a car deaership..in arkensaw taht puts you near the top of the fucking food chain....sure he wasn't east coast eleite...but every thign was laid out for him...and his none black skin tone made sure doors adn opertunities where not slammed shut). He wasn't even poor white, how the fuck is he "black"

Gravatar Love this place, I always learn something.

WTF?!?!
Eyes on the Prize is no longer commercially available?
A. That is just wrong
B. I need to pay more attention

Gravatar The music (and perhaps the clips) were licensed for only a limited time.

That being said, there is bit torrent.

Just looked it up...Hmmm...Juan Williams wrote that??

When did he become a complete f***ing tool?

Gravatar Williams wrote the book that accompanied the first series that ended at the year 1965, when shit was till pretty “Kum-ba-ya”. He's not involved in the “Eyes” project after that.

“Eyes” is presently available only to educational entities.

The only reason I own it is because my wife got it for me in 2001 when PBS video still offered it—albeit on seven VHS tapes which replaces my crappy home-recordings.

I'm dubbing them to DVD this year. A set of the VHS editions went on eBay a couple of years ago for about $400. My wife got mine for $129 when they offered it as a PBS membership premium. It's obscene that this ultimate chronicle of those years isn't available to more people now—but a lot of the popular music and clips in it were indeed as Matthew says, only licensed for a limited time.

When renewal time came, the costs had so escalated that it couldn't be afforded for the numbers the assumed sales base would have been.

Just amazing stuff that I MADE my kids watch as a history lesson.

Gravatar Yeah, my kids roll their eyes whenever I get the old tapes off the shelf to re-watch 'em. Aw, Mom. Not that again.

Yes, my precious ones. That again. It's the same reason I dragged you out to hear Daniel Ellsberg when he came to town; and why I tell you to pay attention to John Dean whenever he's on Countdown. Real-life heroes still walk among us, my darlings -- and you need to know what they look like, what they did, and what it was about them that made them that way.

Because someday, history may come down on your head, too -- and when that time comes, your God, your nation, and your mama will expect nothing less than that same courage of you.

But, Moonglum, while I agree with your larger point, I take issue with your claim that Bill Clinton has never known hardship. He was raised by a single mom in a working-class town (I've been to Hope, and shudder at the memory), lived under the tyranny of a drunk stepfather, and somehow got himself together to get up and out anyway.

His history's not so much different from mine that I'm willing to discount the achievement, or deny him props for what he endured and overcame in his early years.

Gravatar I'm almost in tears right now LM. For real because this is what I've been trying to tell my white friends about when they belittle me when I say I've thought of staying home on election day if Hillary's the nominee.

What are GNBs policies on copying columns because I'm about to copy this thing a shove it in the face of the next person who tells me that blacks are just too sensitive.

I've decided to support Edwards in the MD primary if he's still in the race but that doesn't mean that an attack by anyone on Obama will go unnoticed by me.

I have a 6 year old cousin. He's smart and kind and I can only see a great future for him. Anyone who tells me that when he grows up he should have to put up with being called a drug dealer for nothing more than any white kid does when they are young is an ass.

Oh and BTW peep Shirley Franklins put down of Bill today. It was a beaut.

Gravatar Way to get to the heart of it all, LM. It does make one very sad. And before the croaking "you are too sensitive" chorus gets going (as it did all too often in the comments section following some of Steve's postings) I just have one thing to say: "it is not about you." Don't worry, it will go back to being about you again, but for now, for just one moment, it is not up to anyone to say what the reaction to these attacks should be. Except for the people at whom they are aimed. And make no mistake, these are attacks and they started with all of the surrogates mentioning "cocaine" as often as they possibly could.

Gravatar Because someday, history may come down on your head, too -- and when that time comes, your God, your nation, and your mama will expect nothing less than that same courage of you.

God bless you Mrs Robinson. With the likes of you there is still hope for this nation.

Gravatar Arch-segregationist Stennis continues to represent us.

The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis was given its name by Reagan in ’88, and commissioned by Clinton in ’95.

Gravatar Caro's four-volume LBJ bio will conclude eventually, with his presidential years. As he has alluded, LBJ's entire public life was devoted to collecting power by hook or crook, which he did step by stpe until he became President (as Caro documented, much to the detriment of LBJ's historical reputation). And once he got to the Oval Office, he remembered the brutal poverty of his youth...and rammed the Civil Rights Acts through Congress. Who could have ever seen that coming? I eagerly await Caro's book to see how he describes it.

Gravatar Here is what Alexander Cockburn over at Counterpunch.org has to say on the matter. I pretty much agree.

Gravatar Now, does that make the Clinton camp (Bill included) racist? I honestly don't think so. It's such an amazingly freighted word and is so easy to abuse when more precise language should be used. What I think the Clinton camp is is not above using America's longstanding issues with race in politics as a distraction to put another candidate off his game and distract would-be voters from Mrs. Clinton's exposed flaws when matched against a Barack Obama. --LoLo

Hhmmm... Well, I guess it all depends on what the meaning of "is" is - don't you think???

Gravatar Re: LBJ. That man was a bastard from the beginning. Probably crooked, certainly knew how to game an election or two. Not particularly enlightened about race relations.

But he hated the KKK, and for all the flaws in how he got it done (or why he finally did it), he rammed through the Civil Rights Act, and more importantly the Voting Rights Act. And he did those things knowing full well what it would cost the Democratic Party ("We'll lose the South for a generation...").

God in Heaven, I'm defending LBJ. My parents knocked on doors for Goldwater in '64. I'm still registered Republican, for no good reason.

What has this world come to.

baltogeek --

Just as it is legal for you to make a personal copy of a television show on your VCR or DVR for time-shifting use, it is certainly fair use for you to print out a single copy of a GNB article to show a friend or for you to use on an over-head projector when teaching a class.

All we ask is you make certain to give attribution to Group News Blog and our writer. When printing off a copy, we recommend you click on the link for the particular article first. That way what will be on the page is the article you want, plus the comments, with our copyright notice at the bottom.

Gravatar Mrs Robinson: his mom remarried whn he was three...so while his stepdad was an abuseive drunk, he was not raised by a single mom...he obviosly didn't have too many problem,s with his step dad as he adopted the guys last name. and while it wa a workign class town, it was not a workign calss family...big fish small pond syndrom and all that.

Gravatar Had Eyes on The Prize--both versions--when they were shown here in Atlanta in the very early 90s. GPTV is occasionally good for something. Burned to DVD two years ago.

PS: The AJC just endorsed Obama; I'm voting for whoever the nominee is; but the circular firing squad nonsense must cease.

Gravatar LowerManhattanite -

Eyes on the Prize is now available to the general public on the PBS website. The downside is that it is priced for the educational market - the 7 volume DVD and VHS sets + book are both $385, but as far as I can tell, you don't need to provide credentials to buy it. I dropped a direct link into my homepage link - otherwise go to www.pbs.org, click through to the store, go to the "educational media" page to search

Gravatar When Gillie ascended, I was worried the grit of this location would stop talking to me. But, I was mistaken. YOUR NAIL WORK ON THE BARN DOOR IS AS GOOD AS EVER. Keep streching those pelts.

One thing though, get ahead of the curve and talk about the economy. The ressesion is now. And, it started with Bush's appointee's gaf about not supporting the dolllar. That was week one of the 1st term. The set up was Fed Chair finessing the prim, on the lead up to the election. (What is so familar about the prim's levels, now)?
