Finally, my first comment on GNB and is it any shock that it's on the post about fashion and politics?
I totally agree with VF's assessment of Michelle. I loved her purple dress - though I still decry the lack of attention on the ass pat rather than the fist bump. She seems relaxed and comfortable in practically everything I see her in, meaning that her sense of self inside has translated into how she works it on the outside.
VF is having a total love affair lately with the First Ladies, featuring Mme Sarkozy on their cover this month. I gotta say, though I'm a much bigger fan of Mrs. Barack the Vote as a person, as a former model, Carla rocks the couture just a little better. She's French, what're ya gonna do?

OK, I'm a sucker for this, but the Arts & Crafts into Mission bookcase, with personal books and photographs, plus the rug, plus the slightly awkward but stunning pose -- it's perfect. Hell, I think I might be falling in love a little bit with Michelle.
If it's political theatre (and I hope it's not) it's played better than anyone in the States has done it since the Kennedys.

Talking about this, I realized that you always notice Michelle before you notice her clothes. Her clothing is not armor. She doesn't hide in her outfit or play second fiddle to it. Even Jackie seemed to do that sometimes.
The whole Obama family is gorgeous: fresh, confident, elegant, fun. They project energy, grace, and intelligence. And Michelle has a relaxed, innate, effotless chic. They're gonna look great in the White House.
This may sound piggish, but Michelle also has top-level legs (and arms).
I wouldn't vote for Barack, or even consider him on that basis, but she's definitely attracrtive.
Let me bury myself a bit deeper..
cincy McCain was probably hot in her time, as well. She's still OK.
But, as everyone is probably thinking, so what? I'd rather dismantle our empire and implement national health care (which I use & like).
The fact is, she would be the hottest first lady ever. I may have to forgive Obama the obvious shortcomings after all.
Boy, is Cindy McCain going to be pissed.
She spends $250K a month on her Amex bill -- most of it, ostensibly, on her favorite Escada outfits at several thou a pop. And then this uppity nobody comes along in her Nordstrom-bridge-department stuff that she probably doesn't spend $500 an outfit on, and VF is suddenly crowning her America's Queen of Fashion.
Man, that's GOTTA hurt.
But it's proof, as if we needed any more of it, that clothes don't make the lady.

Yeah, Miki, I first thought that the ass-pat was going into the Hall of Fame next to the Gore lip-lock and Condi’s ‘my husband’, but instant replay showed that the pat was actually slightly north of her ass.

okay, yes, slightly north, but still presidentially south. i'm pretty sure my ballroom dance teacher in college would have disapprovingly moved that hand up higher on the back. but the bottom line is (pun originally unintended, but now intended), how awesome is it that barack pats his lady on the ass! shows me they have an intimacy that isn't old, worn out, or fake -- part of what made the Gore liplock so cringe-worthy. I guess it's kind of like when you're a kid and the sight of your parents kissing was mortifying but then as you get older, it's reassuring. Pat away, Barack - just keep it clean.
You're right, Miki, decidedly south of the conventional line. And call me naive, but I thought that the fist-bump, and even more so the ass-pat, looked spontaneous.
totally spontaneous. the gore liplock was almost as bad as watching michael jackson and lisa marie presley french at the mtv music awards. i was a young, impressionable viewer at the time and my mind has never healed - from seeing either kiss.
