Just the beginning.
With the constant drumbeat of violent eliminationist speech, combined w/ the strong likelihood of a complete Republican meltdown, the potential for violence is massive. I'd anticipate much more of this as wingnut prospects deteriorate.

Another upstanding member of the 27%. I hope this fellow gives up without hurting anyone.
But I would also like to see him get some "air time," since LM made all that popcorn earlier.

ABC is reporting that the guy was well-known to locals, with a history of mental health problems. Guess if we had adequate mental health coverage along with our universal health care coverage, nobody's campaign staff would have to worry 'bout this stuff, huh?
My big question: when will Tweety or lil' Tim give credence to the "Hillary planned it" crowd by repeating the rumor on his show?

Atrios has a troll who thinks the reasonable thing for HRC to do would be to pick up a phone and talk to the guy.
If she did that, I wonder how long it would it for the wingers to start condemning her interference with the police's handling of the case?

It's all over the different comments boards that Hillary staged this and that is one of the more printable posts. The trolls are topping themselves in the vileness sweepstakes.

I'll add base of mental illness to Jen's ultra-religionist, right wing freak, and pray that the hand plays out with the safe release of the hostages and a discussion of how our health care system doesn't address the needs of the chronically mentally ill.
Of course, I want to find a pony in a pile of sh*t, too.

"Guess if we had adequate mental health coverage along with our universal health care coverage, nobody's campaign staff would have to worry 'bout this stuff, huh?"
If memory serves, it was St. Ronnie Raygun who began the process of eliminating a decent safety net for the mentally ill. Which makes the comments concerning Jodie Foster rather ironic, no?
As for the latest wingnut swill...Well, I have zero love or respect for Hillary, but I can't see her pulling a "Bob Roberts", if for no other reason than the media wouldn't hesitate for a second in nailing her to the nearest wall if there was even the barest hint of possibility to such a scheme. They'd crucify her over this (and rightly so, for once), and being humiliated by their media "friends" is the worst nightmare of your typical DLCer, a description that certainly covers Hillary.
Though I could see any of the current Rethug candidates pulling this kind of stunt and getting away with it.

Hat tip to FDL.
The perp appears to be pretty much what I'd expect. Namely, a local who is coming unwrapped for reasons which have nothing to do with politics.

Yeah. If we want to mitigate the risk of similar events in future, we need to see to people who are getting hammered into paste before their minds jump the tracks.
Never going to happen, of course. This is America.

I agree with SteveK upthread. The ingredients for a very bad outbreak of wingnut violence are all in place. There's likely going to be a Democratic presidential nominee who is either female or black. Either one triggers some reptilian centers in certain right-wing brains.
I assume (hope?) the Secret Service is gearing up for an interesting campaign season.

Now now, Mooser, let us not lower the tone of discourse of this place by repeating gossipy speculation about celebrities' sexual orientation.

I understand that The Hill had just gotten her body armor cinched up and was clearing her weapon preparatory to leading the assault on this bunker of IslamoFascistii when news of the man's surrender came thru.
So we'll never get that play-by-play as The Hill goes all Tom Hanks with Bill Zero or The Hannity callin' the play.
Maybe next time, eh?

I assume they're getting their marching orders: GOP candidates get protected, use Dem candidates as shields against gunfire.
I wouldn't trust the Secret Service to protect any of the Democrats, really.

Well, this whole thing could have been much, much worse - just look at the idiocy that's been happening in Boston this year to see what kind of overreaction could have occurred.
The Rochester NH police handled this very professionally - they didn't panic and they talked the guy out without anyone getting seriously hurt. I would hope proper commendations are in the works.
I lived up there for a while, and it's a weird area. Portsmouth is all rich Boston yuppies; Dover, the next town up, is where those who work in Portsmouth live; Somersworth, following, is where those who work in _Dover_ live; and then, at the end of the line is Rochester. That's where the urbanized Boston metro area just stops. North of Rochester is nothing but Stephen King-style creepy woods. In Rochester I've never seen so many bikers on the street anywhere. It looked displaced wingnutty then and I suspect things are much worse now that the main employer, Cabletron, has gone bust after its founder (Craig Benson) cashed out, bought the NH governorship, and was resoundingly defeated two years later because he had broken a basic law of politics: don't behave like an asshole towards your own supporters.
