Makes sense to me... the convention in recent times is the launch pad for the final campaign. It needs to be choreographed for maximum effect or we may lose this thing yet.

I hope that the republican candidate is chosen so we can at least get ready for him... or they could have a nice drag out fight in St. Paul that ends with a bunch of delegates walking out to start their own party... a boy can dream can't he?

Gravatar >boy can dream can't he?

Yes He Can.

Gravatar If it's Obama versus McCain in November, just pass the popcorn.

Gravatar interesting hmmmm

Gravatar Brokered convention! Whee! Fisticuffs in front of the podium just like '52. And the convention will just nominate Al Gore whether he likes it or not. Soooooo...

Gravatar I want to see the GOP convention look like the Democratic gathering in Chicago, '68. Barbed wire under the bunting, cops tasering or gassing the delegates ...

I'd love it - and I'm a Republican who believes in the concept of "destroying the village in order to save it."

Gravatar I want to see the GOP convention look like the Democratic gathering in Chicago, '68.

I'm afraid that wouldn't make a lot of difference, Wanderer. The RWAs who make up the GOP core membership these days would lap that up like a cat lapping cream. Petty authoritarians just LOVE that boot in the face stuff.

Gravatar Well at least here in Kentucky we get to vote before Puerto Rico. Yesterday I was bitching to my son about the uselessness of our May 20th primary. His response was- "considering our history, its probably a good thing that Kentucky has no say". I really had no argument.

Gravatar Stormcrow, it's not so much the violence, but the street theater aspect of it. If I watch a political rile-'em-up, I expect to see some action.

I suggested that Spike TV and the UFC offer a new octagon cage death match debate format the next time around.

Gravatar This bit also reads like a big "fuck you" to the DC media, at least to me.

The Beltway chatterers love getting on the tube and breathlessly gushing over the prospect of a brokered convention. A brokered Dem convention would give them all wood (or ladywood) because it fits with their storyline about the Democrats being disunited and unable to agree on anything.

If all that's the case, then kudos to Dean for heading 'em off at the pass. One would hope that Dean is well aware of how the perceptions of the pundits and gasbags can influence press coverage and election outcomes.

Gravatar I like what Dean's saying, but if it looks like Obama will be the nominee that early the good Dr. will be up against the rest of the DNC's "leadership" (especially McAuliffe and the other DLCers) who are invested in Hillary and want a coronation with lots of pomp and circumstance. And as Jude says, they'll be aided and abetted by the MSM and the idiot pundits, who live for the useless circus that conventions have become.

Good luck, Howard! I'm with you.

Gravatar The idea gets the fan boy/girl dworks all worked up. "Oh boy! I read about a brokered convention in my poly-sci class!"

The reality is if it isn't outright won, someone will have built up a delegate advantage and the super delegates will shove them over the top.

Loser gets campaign debt paid down, donations aplenty to their Senate campaign, their home state will do well in the next appropriations bill and their spouse will get an appointment to the President's Special Committee on Special Committees.

VP and other cabinet slots would be up for consideration as well.

I'm sure they'll attempt another futile change in the nomination system. Starting with the desired result and working backwards.

Gravatar looks like dean is pushign for fl and mi to hold a cacus in aug.

Gravatar Can I ask you to elaborate on the last sentence? Stubborness of the Ho Ho? Ho Ho referring to who?

Gravatar Al Gore gets the nomination?

(this is a joke)

Gravatar ~, who you calling a dwork?

Come over here and say that.

Al Gore on the third ballot! Yeah, baby!

Gravatar I had the same question, Tamens.

Also if this is right: "...their home state will do well in the next appropriations bill..." then as a New Yorker I have to say Go Obama! (Or should that just be Gobama? Does that make me Probama?).

Gravatar Who or what is the Ho, Ho?

Gravatar I think by "Ho Ho" Hubris Sonic means Howard Dean.

Gravatar GOP sources: Romney to suspend campaign

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS...aign/ index.html

Gravatar "I'm afraid that wouldn't make a lot of difference, Wanderer. The RWAs who make up the GOP core membership these days would lap that up like a cat lapping cream. Petty authoritarians just LOVE that boot in the face stuff."

Not if it's their own getting the boot, Stormcrow. I can see it now: St. McCain claws his way into the nomination, and the religious quacks turn up to protest in full force. Emotion is running high, as are tempers, things get out of hand, and the creeps that make up America's far right are finally introduced to certain 'law' enforcement tactics that they cheer about when applied to anybody Other Than Themselves. And won't it be amusing to see Limbaugh, Coulter, et al screech in horrified outrage when their own stooges are viciously beaten and jailed (with the approval of the GOP Big Wigs, of course)? "H-H-huh-How can this BE?!? Is this America!??? Why didn't anybody warn us about this sort of thing?!!!"

Can you imagine the reaction of St. McCain - with his delicate equilibrium humming at its usual full "Blast Furnace Rage-O-Rama" setting - when confronted by Rethuglican protesters at his Party Coronation for Official Presidential Candidate? I envision him responding with something along the lines of, oh, say:

*top of lungs screaming*"I CAN HAVE YOU KILLED FOR THAT!!!!!!!!"*/top of lungs screaming*

A heart-warming thought, isn't it? Heh, heh, heh, heh, heh! Oh, well. a boy can dream, can't he?

Gravatar Mr. Stoopid, if you say you're "Probama" here in Florida, someone might want to fight you. Gators fans, mostly.

If it is so that someone has hacked into the Mittbot and altered his programming, I think that the Savage Boohoo aimed at him should be diverted toward His Partial Eminence Governor-Reverend Huckabeebee.

C'mon, there has to be something scurrilous in this guy's past - he was a governor and a preacher, fer Cthulhu's sake! Molested kids, bribes, whatever - we need to destroy this hung-dog looking mother.

Gravatar Wanderer:

Huckabee paroled a convicted rapist, who went on to kill again.

That much is already well known.

Gravatar Stickler, agreed! But we need more, and then to tar and feather the God-besotted fool with it.

Gravatar Long before the convention, the superdelegates will assess the situation, decide which candidate would have the longer coattails, and pledge their votes accordingly. The identity of the nominee will be known before the solstice.

Gravatar hey mittens jsut droped out.

Gravatar No!
Not the Mittster!
I guess he wants to spend more time with his money

Gravatar Hubris, could you elaborate on the Ho Ho part of your comment? I love you guys, but if that is a slam on Hillary, well then that would be bullshit.

If there is some place where Howard Dean is called a Ho Ho, then that is stupid, but umm, okay.

Gravatar Since the Mittster dropped out do you think his military age boys will join the Army to help with War on Terror?

Gravatar tamens its a nick name for dean...not sure of the origins...think its a HoJo referances.

man hillary supporters gotta stop seeign consperacies every where

Gravatar Moonglum, I respect that you are a constant contributor of the blog, and as a constant reader of the blog, you don't know if I'm a conspiracy nut or not.

But, please don't confuse annoyance at a sentence structure, because the word HO is an insult to women, to seeing the bloggers at The Groups News Blog as misognystic fools. Because I don't. They're awesome.

Gravatar And here I thought that by "the Ho Ho" they were talking about creme-filled rolled chocolate snack cakes.

I can't stomach them anymore, but when I was in high school they were like manna from heaven.

Gravatar hmmmmmm, mannna... (drools).

Gravatar tamens Ho Ho has been a netroots nick name for dean for a while...not sure when it origninated...I assumed as I am sure HS did that it was common usage...sorry for hte acusations

Gravatar 'Ho-Ho' has become an affectionate term used by Dean people for the Gov. Source may be here: http://thepublicpress.com/page/i...ndex.php? e=SM14

and Hubris is right - DLC power-mad underestimate him at their peril.

Gravatar Thank you for linking that, I had never heard Dean referred to in that manner before, I thought I was better informed than I apparently was.

Gravatar They do likes to make "the arrangements" don't they. Hill had to loan money to herself because she thought it would be over by now and really misjudged their personally selected opponent. Didn't think he'd get quite this much support.

He really should have said "McCauliff is pressuring me or he won't let me sit in for him no mo".

Really, since Hillary has shown yet another bad judgement and that she's not really much of a fiscal planner, she should just withdraw. I could get on board with that senario.

Gravatar Myrtle June; by the DLC calculations, hell by the traditional dem calculations this shoudl be over now...hillary is gettign kerry like numbers, clinton 1 like numbers...she should demolish any other dem canadat...Obama is a game changer, there are people voteing for him who have NEVER VOTED BEFORE. the youth and the diselusioned.

These are people who have never held there nose and voted..ever. they sat on there hands during the kerry election which was as important as this one...adn they didn't hate kerry..a lot of them hate or are sick of clinton. If it isn't Obama they don't show in the genral...these recored numbers don't go to the polls. it will be hard line dems vs hard lien republicans again(well not even that good, four years ago folks liek me held our nose for kerry, I can't do that for clinton)...how did that work for you 4 years ago?

Gravatar I agree with you moonglum. Many of the folk voting for Obama won't vote for HRC and this has nothing to do with the reasons ehy I'm not voting for her.

People really believe in what the an is selling and it's him or not at all. Unlike with Kerry (and probably Clinton) folk are voting for something, for someone and HRC just really ain't inspiring folk like that. And that lack of inspiration will probably bite us in the as come the general.

Gravatar JJ thats what i dont' think the establishemnt dems, here and else where dont' get.

its not a threat its a warning. there are a lot of people willign ot vote for something...and yet every four years the dems troat some one up whose ONLY selling point is that they are not a republican, hell not a strong republican .....without a strong thrid party assist the republican lite stratagy fails every year. Why would you try to rally behind it one more time? that ship said ~30 years ago.

Gravatar He really should have said "McCauliff is pressuring me or he won't let me sit in for him no mo".

Myrtle June, get bent. Howard Dean ain't afraid of no one, no how, least of all Terry McAuliffe.

Besides, you're completely ignorant as to how the DNC chair gets the gig. It's an elected position, and the electorate consists of the state executive committee members.

Dean won them over with his 50-state strategy, despite resistance from the party poobahs.

Your comment is based on some narrative/fever dream of your own invention rather than actual, y'know, facts.

Gravatar hamletta: while you may be rigth on deanI don't think he gets his way...looking at the math, unless something drematic happens neither canadate will have enough delegates to win the nomination. If obama is behind I see him bowign out for the good of the nation....if hillary is behind i see them clining on desperatly to a convention win via the super delegates or a borkered convention. Obama is allready ahead in pleged delagates I don't see that lead dominishing.

Deans best bet is to ocnvince Mi and FL to a new vote (closed caucuse is what they are talking about) the clinton crew will fight that touth and nail as they "won" those states...that may be a case of eb carful of what you wish for as even if those delegates gets reinstated she will have t otry and retroactivly change party rules. they got stripped for her bennift as party rules state that any canadate champaning in one of the timeline jumping states will have any delegates they win assigned evenly to all of the other canadates.

I dont' see obama bowign out if he is ahead, nor should he. I don't see the clintons bowing out if they are trailing, they are not about anyones bennifit but their own.

Gravatar gotta agree, hamletta, that's the way his DNC Chair win happened - and Gov. Dean doesn't suffer bull---- gladly. which means that the DLC's losing shenanigans (HRC their chosen poster person, btw) don't get very far.
