This is going to get interesting. Because so much of Corporate America runs on the backs of undocumented workers. The Republican Party is now on a collision course with its own owners.
The German industrialists who bankrolled Hitler thought they could control him, too.
These people keep on making the same mistakes, over and over again, down the generations. They never, ever learn.

Doc, this left me a little confused as well. I thought that business wanted to be able to hire illegals to keep their costs down. Looks to me like the fundy wing and the biz wing are at odds here. In which case I hope LM will share some of the Rudi-watch popcorn.

US Blues.
Both you and Stormcrow have nailed it.
I love the politics of self-destruction.

Having once lived in Arizona for 12 years, I can definitely say that some of the stupidest, most regressive, most self-destructive politics to be found in the Union can be viewed in the Copper State. It's probably in part because only the grimmest Rethugs win the primaries whenever there is a contest (since it's generally the hardcore 20% or so that vote in them), and then go on to win the general when apathetic (and often more moderate) voters whose sole source of news is Rush and wouldn't ever vote for a Dem (not even one who mirrored their views exactly) over a Rethug (even one who thought Hitler, hell, Torquemada, was a milquetoast liberal) turn out in greater force.
Arizona is definitely competing with Texas (h/t Molly Ivins, RIP) for the honor of this nation's biggest laboratory for Bad Government. This despite the efforts of excellent Dems such as Governor Napolitano and the (at least as of when I left) strong efforts of local Dems to build a strong grassroots-based state party. Looks like they still have a ways to go.
Incidentally, I would say that AZ is a place where there's some potential for a big split between the fundie right and the libertarian right. I could see Ron Paul winning fairly big in the AZ primaries if John McCain is out by then.

the real, and entrenched racism of arizona, the "sundown towns" that still exist, the ever present threat of violence and the clearly marked lines of segregation are one of the reasons i returned to california.
this is nothing out of the ordinary for them. and yes, they are gleefully cutting their own throats on many, many levels.
they are welcome to do so. the current republican crowd remind me of nothing less than a bunch of unhappy teenagers sitting on the bed, listening to complaint rock and going at themselves with razor blades. stupid, messy, silly cuts.

Why do we care if Arizona cuts its throat? One basketcase of a state where we have Texas and Alaska? They'll get theirs when the Colorado dries up.

How long will it take for Arizona to have some serious economic problems related to this law? I think some of them have already started. And then what? It will be hard to reverse the bad will. I shall be looking in on the situation. Any readers out there that can recommend an on-line Arizona newspaper that reports on the Arizona economy sans the xenophobic slant?
Thanks in advance.

Lighten up on Texas, it isn't all bad here. On the border, right now, people are in court fighting imminent domain claims on their land filed by Homeland Security, in order to build that ignorant fence. They aren't going to win, but at least they are fighting back.

This issue already divides the Arizona Republican Party. Remember when the infamous frothing lunatic Don Goldwater called for undocumented immigrants to be held in forced labor camps during the 2006 election campaign?
Arizona Republicans John McCain and Jim Kolbe both promptly told him, in no uncertain terms, to shut his fool's mouth. Because both of these guys seem to understand, as Barry's idiot nephew does not, that Hispanics comprise more than 28% of the state's population.
Neither McCain nor Kolbe wants to see the Republican party nailed to a cross. Which is pretty much what they can expect to see happen if more than 1/4 of the state's population suddenly starts voting Democratic, en bloc.

My mother lives in Tucson. I grew up in Tucson (mostly.) I consider Arizona to be my (other) home.
I hate what these assholes are doing to my home.
Fuck the political advantage this is giving to our party... LIVES are being destroyed. FAMILIES are being ripped apart.
Gods I hate these self-centered Republican self-righteous hypocritical pricks. Especially given how they do it all in Jesus' name.
Arrrrgh!
Gods save us from angry white men.

You mentioned something about the sheriff in Phoenix. Anything new and crazy that Joe Arapaio is doing lately?
That guy is simply a publicity hound whose stunts don't really add or enhance effective law enforcement.
