Yes, they can swim. I just watched a National Geographic special on tigers that were transplanted from Asia to Africa in an attempt to repopulate the species. One tiger actually swam out and dove under for a piece of meat...amazing.

LTS,
Is it true that Mr. Woods’s best mate in Nam was named Tiger or had the nickname Tiger? And that the chap never made it back home? There is always some many stories around legends.
And if we are talking about real tigers, we had two Bengalese tigers down in Oudshoring in Cape Province. Beautiful animals, superb hunters with an endless amount of brute force and power. I have seen the biggest lions in sub-Saharan Africa and they scared the scheit out of me and let me tell you these two tigers was bigger, stronger and a whole lot more intimidating.
Unfortunately some idiot fed them the wrong goods and the male died, they were called Sher and Chan. As for swimming they sure can, most of the big cats are good swimmers, whey won’t (normally) hunt in water but they will swim to cross rivers.
Thanks,

Van Andrew Wilson
Wilson,Van Andrew Beloved son, brother and friend, Van Andrew Wilson went to heaven on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2006. He was born in Baton Rouge on Sept. 3, 1982. Van lived a short but full life. On Dec. 9, 2005, he achieved a goal he had set in middle school -- he completed training as a U.S. Navy SEAL. Van was in an auto accident while en route to his first duty assignment with SEAL Team 10 in Little Creek, Va.

On the other hand, God Bless the Wilson family and my prayers and thoughts are with them.
I recently watched the whole Discovery series on SEAL training (thanks CTG!) and I have to say I didn't think I could be so impressed. Not only with the SEAL candidates themselves but the instructors. WOW. That is some well thought out training. I loved how they are in such close contact and all focus in whatever way is needed on each man. I was extremely impressed. If you haven't had a chance to watch them, try to. Worth watching six disks. I did it over two days. Really something.

PC, I hope you're enjoying yourself. I'm not impressed by the website (Yours? you've plugged it enough). Sure, there are vets running for office as Dems. Some I would probably like, though probably wouldn't vote for, but all in all, I think it is a good movement for the Dem party, and for American politics in general. I believe that the death spiral the Dems are in is unhealthy for the entire political process. The Democrat party moving back to a more moderate and, frankly, sane stance appeals to me quite a bit. Do you have anything to say other than 'the dems are running 50 vets!'? Since you are keeping score, how many Repubs are vets? or does that matter? You might also want to tell the site that they should do better quality control on the 'index cards' about the candidates- there were more than a few 'adjusted' descriptions, which didn't jive with the candidates own site info, or were obviously wrong.

Yes. If a 25 year old Bush political apointeee can alter the scientific data from NASA to meet the demands of the religious right and politcal positions, then anything is possible. So yes, tigers can swim.
"In interviews this week, more than a dozen public-affairs officials, along with half a dozen agency scientists, spoke of growing efforts by political appointees to control the flow of scientific information.
In the months before the 2004 election, according to interviews and some documents, these appointees sought to review news releases and to approve or deny news media requests to interview NASA scientists.
Repeatedly that year, public-affairs directors at all of NASA's science centers were admonished by White House appointees at headquarters to focus all attention on Mr. Bush's January 2004 "vision" for returning to the Moon and eventually traveling to Mars. "

If these veterans you speak of running for office are on the Murtha-Pelosi platform of defeatism, they will not get many votes. Remember last election? There was Kerry, and Gen. Wesley Clark four stars no less! They all lost because the IDEAS they promote don't square with what most Americans want from their leaders.
Just because they are veterans doesn't mean they are shoe-ins, PC. You, along with most Democrats, seem to think that American voters are pavlovian dogs who will respond if the right voltage is applied. Well, guess what? We want to WIN! Democrats like you think you can hypnotize red staters with a liberal in a uniform. That will only insult you "subjects". People see through this kind of condescending crapola. What does this mean, exactly?
"But regardless of how we have served our country in uniform, we all have progressive to moderate social views and are running on platforms to support working families, insure fair taxation, protect Social Security, restore American values, fully fund programs to aid education, the poor and disabled, equality of opportunity for all Americans, and sound environmental policies to safeguard our land."
Sounds like disguised liberalism, to me.
Yes, these are Democrats, allright.
"And one more thing. Most of the Fighting Dems come from so-called “Red” districts. But America is not Red and Blue; it is Red, White and Blue — a land in which all Americans share common values, aspirations and dreams. And our brigade of fighting Democrats is intent on taking Congress back from those who have hijacked our nation, distorted our values, devastated our economy, damaged our nation’s credibility, derailed the middle class, and distracted us from the War on Terror by sending our fathers and sons, mothers and daughters and brothers and sisters to be maimed and to die fighting a war that did not need to be fought."
We've been through all this before. The stars and medals are not what people vote for. They vote for IDEAS. There are no new ideas here, just '04 repackaged because us knuckledraggers in flyover country were too stupid to get it last time around. Anyone disagree with that?

There's one more throwback to '04 in this screed:
" Now is the time to turn the tide and chase the Republican chickenhawks out of Congress and replace them with true patriots. Make America strong by electing those who have fought on the front lines to fight once more on the home front.
I stand with the Band of Brothers. We will put America back on course, make America strong and secure, and insure that America is truly the land of the free and the home of the brave."

Newly released court papers could put holes in the defense of Dick Cheney's former chief of staff, I. Lewis (Scooter) Libby, in the Valerie Plame leak case. Lawyers for Libby, and White House allies, have repeatedly questioned whether Plame, the wife of White House critic Joe Wilson, really had covert status when she was outed to the media in July 2003. But special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald found that Plame had indeed done "covert work overseas" on counterproliferation matters in the past five years, and the CIA "was making specific efforts to conceal" her identity, according to newly released portions of a judge's opinion.
---- just keeping you all honest. During this debate, many of the bloggers here stated Plame was not covert...not that a court opinion means much, to those who will flog just about anything, no matter how untrue.

Brian...The NASA STORY...you know... you touted that the admin was all about science..here is the NASA story...any Comment?
05 feb o6
The Big Bang memo came from Mr. Deutsch, a 24-year-old presidential appointee in the press office at NASA headquarters whose résumé says he was an intern in the "war room" of the 2004 Bush-Cheney re-election campaign. A 2003 journalism graduate of Texas A&M, he was also the public-affairs officer who sought more control over Dr. Hansen's public statements.
In October 2005, Mr. Deutsch sent an e-mail message to Flint Wild, a NASA contractor working on a set of Web presentations about Einstein for middle-school students. The message said the word "theory" needed to be added after every mention of the Big Bang.
The Big Bang is "not proven fact; it is opinion," Mr. Deutsch wrote, adding, "It is not NASA's place, nor should it be to make a declaration such as this about the existence of the universe that discounts intelligent design by a creator."
It continued: "This is more than a science issue, it is a religious issue. And I would hate to think that young people would only be getting one-half of this debate from NASA. That would mean we had failed to properly educate the very people who rely on us for factual information the most."
The memo also noted that The Associated Press Stylebook and Libel Manual specified the phrasing "Big Bang theory." Mr. Acosta, Mr. Deutsch's boss, said in an interview yesterday that for that reason, it should be used in all NASA documents.
The Deutsch memo was provided by an official at NASA headquarters who said he was upset with the effort to justify changes to descriptions of science by referring to politically charged issues like intelligent design. Senior NASA officials did not dispute the message's authenticity.
Mr. Wild declined to be interviewed; Mr. Deutsch did not respond to e-mail or phone messages. On Friday evening, repeated queries were made to the White House about how a young presidential appointee with no science background came to be supervising Web presentations on cosmology and interview requests to senior NASA scientists.
In interviews this week, more than a dozen public-affairs officials, along with half a dozen agency scientists, spoke of growing efforts by political appointees to control the flow of scientific information.
In the months before the 2004 election, according to interviews and some documents, these appointees sought to review news releases and to approve or deny news media requests to interview NASA scientists.
Now you have the story...it is in papers all across the country.

Some 24 year old's opinion is ruining science in America? Give me a break. The SOTU address is just rhetoric, but a kid's memo is earth shattering.

PC ...
I have a degree in electrical engineering, with almost enough chemistry courses under my belt to have majored in that subject, too.
I also have spent over 22 years applying science as a designer.
The "kid" was spot-on.
People like you keep mistating these theories as fact, or at least conventional wisdom ... when you have insufficient proof to conclusively declare them factual.
Notice that he was not trying to PROVE intelligent design theory, but instead was trying to avoid it being discounted by the exclusive promotion of the conventional wisdom.
IMO the exclusive promotion of evolutionary theories by our scientific community is as much driven by groupthink ... and the perceived need within that group of a "litmus test" to prove that one is not tainted by "superstition" ... as it is by science.
This can be as faith-based as what I learn in church on Sunday ... based on a (misplaced) faith of the ability of human beings to ACCURATELY and COMPLETELY perceive the universe around them.
It is as if the roles of Galileo and the Catholic Church were reversed, with the "scientists" spouting dogma and the churchman pointing to observable fact.
BTW, as a designer for over 22 years, I have the experience to know good design when I see it ... show me another process that produces the sustainable, structured, AND dynamic characteristics that are exhibited by living things, without the intervention of intelligence.
If life is built on all other physical processes alone, it is only as strong as its weakest plank.

Brian -- thanks for the examples.
As for a "scary religious right", one look at the number of different evangelical denominations represented by the church listings in any city's phone book should tell the critics something ... like, if they can't get along enough to unite as a single denomination, any attempt of one sect to impose a theocracy in their image would be ripped to shreds by thoe in the other sects.
The vast majority of the critics, however, couldn't tell the difference between a Seventh-Day Adventist and a snake handler ... most only have the most superficial (read: what they see on TV, or a single bad experience.) knowledge of evangelical Christianity, and are extrapolating from that limited base ... or extrapolating from their experience in so-called "mainline" denominations that are far more hierarchial than the highly-autonomous evangelical congegrations.
(This is especially true on the coasts, where evangelical churches are smaller and fewer than in flyover country. I've even had some difficulty finding a church here on Long Island ... but I think I have, finally.)
As for the critics ... they still are the the clueless,(aspiring to)leading the clueless ...

PC- Do you know more than NASA scientists? Are you qualified to issue an opinion on the subject?
"The memo also noted that The Associated Press Stylebook and Libel Manual specified the phrasing "Big Bang theory." -from the article you cited
Good enough for AP, but not you? How old are you, PC? 24? I was a really smart idiot when I was 24, but some 24 year olds are rather mature, even, dare I say, intelligent. They even get put in charge of mutli-million dollar equipment and are trained to make real honest-to-God life and death decisions. You'll find them in the military you're so big on seeing run for congress. Big Bang is a theory. There are many other competing theories, and at some point, when it goes beyond that which is explainable by your beloved science, we have to come up with explanations which also go beyond science. It is quite logical. Many theories which later proved to be true were derided as ridiculous by small minded people like you who couldn't conceive things bigger than the current sphere of common knowledge. Thanks for the entertainment. Oh, and perhaps you could let us know when Fitz files those charges- what's keeping him?

By the way, Intel Design is not Science, and that has been proven in a court of law. What a waste of time and money.
By your own standards, since when are lawyers and judges "qualified" to render scientific opinion?
By my standards, Intelligent Design and evolutionary theory are just that ... theories. Both deserve consideration and discussion ... there just has been more investment in evolutionary research to date than in ID.
That is in itself ... and evidence of ... a serious problem.
The problem is, many in the academic community ARE "invested" in evolution. Their careers and livelihood are based upon its teaching ... and serious consideration of a competing theory might cause others to question their worth as scientists.
And, I do stand by my assertion that expressing support for the conventional -- evolutionary -- wisdom is a litmus test within the academic community, to show that one is not tainted by the "ignorant superstition" of a serious spiritual worldview.
It is, to this secualr faith, the equivalent of "speaking in tounges" is to some in Christianity -- an outward sign, fervently sought after, that one is a true believer.
Both of these litmus tests are flawed, as they do not represent the truth.
Scientists are human; they desire both acceptance and personal success ... and that desire can skew their perceptions and presentations, just like anyone else.
You want a bigger grant, or to fill that endowed chair, or even mere tenure? Express ideas that dovetail with the politics and ideology of those holding the pursestrings ... and don't question their preconceived notions, especially in ways that would make them very uncomfortable.
Ways like ... telling them that everything they have based their careers upon is wrong? That the obsevable facts within their grasp don't tell the WHOLE story? That the concept of a Creator might be more than superstition ... which can be perceived by the powers-that-be to suggest that said Creator might not like what the powers-that-be are doing with their lives right now?
(Same goes for global warming -- wanna be a winner ... find something to blame upon greedy Americans, even if your computer models can't agree upon it. The Leftist desire for wealth redistribution, as much as "science", drove the construction of that leaky Band-Aid(TM) we call "Kyoto".)
I am not high, I assure you ... you, however, PC, are exhibiting the smug arrogance that equates education with wisdom ... an arrogance that places blind faith in the ability of a human being to accurately and completely perceive the universe.
So typical of Leftists ... as is "investment" in flawed thinking; your Democratic leadership is also invested in the idea that we can't now, and couldn't ever, win in Iraq.
Fighting Dems or not, unless the leadership credibly changes in this area, the GOP keeps Congress.

That's not going happen obviously but Iraq is never going to be a stable-type Western democracy for decades so.......... We'll find out soon enough.

The court found that ID was not science after listening to Scientific evidence...A Bush appointed Judge gave a non biased opinion based on the scientific facts. He listened to hours of sceintific testimony on both sides of the issue. He read the textbooks, he gathered all the evidence, and found that ID is nothing more than dressed up creationism.
ID is religious theory, none of it can be proven or disproven. That makes it philosophy or theology. Your standards are not based on science. It really is, that simple.

One judge.
Hardly what I'd call peer review ... but then again, peer review of ID in today's biased environment would probably produce the same result.
And judges have been wrong ... can you say "Dred Scott"?
Let me repeat the question, PC ... show me another process that produces the sustainable, structured, AND dynamic characteristics that are exhibited by living things, without the intervention of intelligence.
Show me where evolution PROVES how such a combination of structure and dynamic behavior can exist in the absence of intelligent intervention.
If, OTOH, any of the physical processes that evolutionary theory depends upon as the basis for life cannot spontaneously produce such a combination, the theory has nothing to stand on. It "can't get there from here."
If producing such orderly dynamism was so easy, I'd be out of a job ... and what I do is NOTHING compared to the complexity of life.
If you can't answer that, you're just hiding behind the judge ... and not facing the limitations of your own position.
I don't care if you accept ID or not ... what I do care about is that you, and our educators, acknowledge the serious limitations in the THEORY that you have no qualms about teaching as fact ... and maybe acknowledge your own perceptual limitations, instead of arrogantly acting like you know it all as you denegrate all those who disagree with your worldview as "ignorant".
I'll freely admit where my position is based on faith ... I expect the same from those who place blind faith in themselves, instead of stating the tenets of their faith as fact, simply because they invoke themselves instead of a Diety to justify them.

PC, you speak about 'science' as if ALL scientists agree on the nature of the universe. You must know that's very, VERY far from the truth- scientists disagree about everything, including the big bang theory, which in that case alone has at least four variants anyway. As for a judge making a decision based on scientific evidence, has a judge or 'expert witness' ever been wrong before? Not to mention that a legal answer to a science question says something about your certitude and qualifications to debate the subject. Also, as I said before- "Many theories which later proved to be true were derided as ridiculous by small minded people like you who couldn't conceive things bigger than the current sphere of common knowledge." Science is impotent if you're sure you already know everything- because then it's faith, not science. Oddly enough, it's the religious faithful who are keeping an open mind about the subject of the origins of the universe, instead of the so-called 'progressive' folks.

Sorry to keep beating a dead horse, but it feels so good...
PC, perhaps you'd be interested in this quote:
"I was interested in the question of whether there had been a Big Bang singularity, because that was crucial to an understanding of the origin of the universe. Together with Roger Penrose, I developed a new set of mathematical techniques, for dealing with this and similar problems. We showed that if General Relativity was correct, any reasonable model of the universe must start with a singularity. This would mean that science could predict that the universe must have had a beginning, but that it could not predict how the universe should begin: for that one would have to appeal to God."
Now, this wasn't from some NASA scientist, so I hope you'll not discount it, it's from Steven Hawking, perhaps the formost astrophysicist in the world. You might want to read the whole lecture, it's quite interesting, and he manages to put complex issues into relatively simple terms. http://www.ralentz.com/old/astro.../hawking-

Pops,
I hear you. I prefer posts and comments to stay on topic. However, I'm not sure that is what is driving Froggy into hiatus.
I know I'm busy right now. I'm also very much in the mood to step back and reflect on what's going on in the world. If what is happening in Europe and the Middle East explodes, my butt will likely stay planted in the US. However, if I was closer to those in the front, I'd think now is the time to watch and listen rather than comment.
Burning embassies is an act of war, unless your a liberal. We made the mistake of ignoring such acts under Carter and lightly responding to them under Clinton. The Europeans seem to be following Carter.

Thanks douglas...no one is denying that there are parts of evolution that Science cannot exaplain, and that is where theology or philosophy take over. The point is, to teach one set of Theology, disguised as science is wrong... especially on our dime.
By the way....
George C. Deutsch, the young presidential appointee at NASA who told public affairs workers to limit reporters' access to a top climate scientist and told a Web designer to add the word "theory" at every mention of the Big Bang, resigned yesterday, agency officials said.
Mr. Deutsch's resignation came on the same day that officials at Texas A&M University confirmed that he did not graduate from there, as his résumé on file at the agency asserted.
So much for this fine upstanding young man...who did not even have a BA, and was controlling what NASA could print. The important thing was that he was a big fund raiser for the president, and a Religiously correct watch dog...hey, cool
term ...religiously correct...did I just coin that? lol. How many incompetent people who do nothing but push politics over facts, can this Aministration put into positions of power, before we are sick of it?

Brian- The Democrats can hit the reset button and get onboard. We can go back to a strong Blue collar type party, that promotes a strong defense, good wages, and equality. That is what this movement is all about. Being strong, smart, and having values that respect the Constitution, the poor, a womans choice, equality for all Americans. In the end it is about honesty. their agenda is there for you to read. If you do not like it, vote for someone else.
May I remind you that Bob Kery, was the first person to suggest that we declare war on Al Q, long before the USS Cole/ 9/11 etc. Of course, he was labled as a baby killer before the 2000 primary, so we never had a chance to hear what he had to say. Wounded Soldier Billed for Bloodied Body Armor
By ALLISON BARKER, AP
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Feb. - A former U.S. soldier injured in Iraq says he was forced to pay $700 for a blood-soaked body armor vest that was destroyed after medics removed it to treat shrapnel wounds to his arm.
First Lt. William "Eddie" Rebrook IV, 25, had to leave the Army because of his injuries. But before he could be discharged last week, he had to scrounge up cash from his buddies to pay for the body armor or face not being discharged for months. Rebrook was billed because a supply officer failed to document that the vest had been destroyed more than a year ago as a biohazard....

This from the NRO on Plamgate...
"Beyond what was stated in the court paper, say people with firsthand knowledge of the matter, Libby also indicated what he will offer as a broad defense during his upcoming criminal trial: that Vice President Cheney and other senior Bush administration officials had earlier encouraged and authorized him to share classified information with journalists to build public support for going to war. Later, after the war began in 2003, Cheney authorized Libby to release additional classified information, including details of the NIE, to defend the administration's use of prewar intelligence in making the case for war. Anyone believe the Vice President of the United States can get things declassified if he wants to because Senator Carl Levin(D-MI), the ranking Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee certainly can and has declassified paragraphs from classified documents so he could wave it around while berating the President in front of the news conferences he arranged.
Doesn't the #2 in the executive branch have the authority to decide something is important to the public relations effort, and then decide in meetings with other principals that it should be declassified and shared with the public as part of their message to the country? I think so.
The NYT and WaPo have no authority to do that, nor do mid-level beaurocrats in the agencies. Joe Wilson and Valerie Plame are good examples. They serve at the pleasure of the executive, who nominates the CIA Director and the Senate confirms.

The Democrats are not going to gain enough ground because the out of touch liberals you mentioned run the party and are the biggest donors to the party, ala Howard Dean and George Soros. Nobody will tolerate a sensible Democrat speaking up about anything. The leftwing party line is all that I see coming from any of these people.
Maybe there will be a moonbat indy candidate that will split the dem vote along the war fracture. Maybe the Dems will nominate the moonbat candidate themselves, in which case they will lose for sure. I just think they are toast, and I don't see any brilliance covering this up.
Who's it going to be? How do you reconcile the DLC and MoveOn.org? Hillary? She can't win nationally. The recent polls prove that. She's got %50+ negatives, and she's not even really running yet. Kerry one more time? Edwards? Warner? Who?

Sorry, Pops. Kind of on topic. wretchard is another cool "cat":
"Martin Luther King's letter from Birmingham jail is a snapshot of a vanished world. King argued for equality; to be able to take his daughter to an amusement park, to be able to take family vacation cross-country; to have his wife and mother called "Mrs". What liberal man today would call another man's partner "Mrs"? Who would not picket an amusement park? Who would not belligerently ask what was meant by "family"? Go tell it on the mountain. Which mountain? Brokeback Mountain. We are arrived at a point where the only thing worth fighting for is the right to kill our own children in the name of Womyn's Rights...
