robert,
i don't know if you're familiar with philippine politics. this matter goes beyond mere choice of religions. this catholic hierarchy dictating national policy - openly intimidating democratically elected representatives to defend an outmoded dogma!

For people who like all of the above except gay marriage, there's always Islam.

No I didn't miss what wasn't there.
In Europe, the black plague decreased the authority of the church because people realized it cannot solve or explain the death of 1/4 of the population from what we now know was a viral pandemic.
In our country, our problems are still attributed by the poor masses to the government or globalization or the rich, never the church.
Funny thing is, they might be correct.

djb,
you know i was quite ambivalent with the militantism of the church when it came to their critique of corruption in government. but this. this is another matter altogether.

great post sparks!
as to what's the fuss, i really think it has to do with Humanae Vitae, in which this became an infallible Papal teaching.
which means the church has painted itself in a corner of hubris. the hierarchy knows that changing its position would give "flip flop" a whole 'nuther meaning, one that would be dangerously subversive to the Church's most dearly guarded claim to perfection and omniscience.
it's not really even about "sex" but "power"
