ATTENTION, all bloggers:
perhaps we should create a BLOG ROADBLOCK?
A “Roadblock” is the placement strategy used by advertisers to create a big buzz when launching a new campaign. For example, at exactly 8pm on Easter Sunday, all channels, from ch.2-5-7-9-23 would show the same TV commercial at exactly the same time, hence creating a roadblock… no matter where they go, the viewers see the same thing. It cannot be IGNORED. Even by media.
We can do the same here, we of the thousand blogs!!!
I also suggest that all of us bloggers put up the same Title and include a graphic (something like a “Fire Malu!” logo, Ghosbusters style) that we can all put up on our blogs simultaneously.
Both the title and logo should show some restraint, as some of us are more reserved than the likes of myself, who put titles like “You’re Bacon, Bitch!!!” on my blog.
I think we can come to a concensus here. Ideas? Suggestions? Artwork? please send me an e-mail: spanxster@gmail.com, or drop a line at www.spankyenriquez.blogspot.com

thanks betty. thanks gigi.
ah well, malu fernandez would probably decide to go on vacation elsewhere very soon. like tim yap, she'll probably fly off to europe to lick her wounds.
oo nga naman. her columns will forever be swimming in cyberspace, open for all to read.
as of writing, i can't access the manila standard site any longer from this part of the planet. it says traffic is too heavy. i guess the news has spread like wildfire and everyone has crashed the site's server. hehe.

Sparks - I always appreciate the honest, rational, and sensible way you present your ideas. I was a bit surprised then that a couple of the comments attacked you and insinuated that you are of Malu's ilk, at least as far as this issue is concerned.
Anyone who has made a cruel joke about a fat person, a disabled or elderly person, a not-so-goodlooking person, or anyone of a different race, ethnicity, and/or culture (yes, that includes comments about our Muslim brethren) has been bigoted at some time or another. Bigotry is all around us -- even/especially in Filipino TV sitcoms and variety shows where all the above are fair game. Malu's kind is her blatant elitism.
There is no kind better or worse than another, in my eyes. When Malu bemoans the sounds and smells of the OFW, and she in turn is demeaned simply because of her (large) size, it is bigotry all around. What makes her ugly is not how she looks, it's what's inside her head.
Yes, I agree with you that she should have kept her elitist views to herself and within her network of friends. True, she is insensitive and even stupid -- as the aunt of Sen.Zubiri I would hope she understands the conditions of the majority of Filipinos in the country she lives in. Of course the argument can be made that she shouldn't be elitist to begin with -- but unless she herself decides her class mentality is outdated then no letter-writing campaign can or will make her change her ideas (though it may silence her, at least in the general public).
The difference between Marie Antoinette and Malu Fernandez is that the former, according to recent research and writing, while clueless, most likely did not say the infamous words that went down (with her head) in history . Malu published her elitist, insensitive, and stupid thoughts for the entire world to see -- forever. These words she will never be able to take back, even if one day she sees the error of her thoughts and ways.
Whether she does or not, I have no idea. But I do know if there were ever to be revolution in the Philippines, she could easily get on a plane, make her home elsewhere, and not have to deal.

Iba ang perception ng mga rich na pinoy sa mga middle and lower class.
I cant blame Malu for her perception. She has been surrounded by the rich since she was young. Its already ingrained in her system
I had associated with the rich and the very poor when i was in UP and now as a maid agency owner and the mindset of both will never meet.
To end this furor I think the explanation should be requested from the editor of the publication. As an editor you are responsible for whatever is released in your publication. Its not just the writer. The duty of the editor is to make sure that all articles before its printed conforms with the magazines ethics(if there is any) and the sensibilities of the general public (readership)

paolo,
i was responding to you questioning whether those calling for malu's resignation (forced or not) have a moral ground to do so. in your own words, there's elitists in all of us.
i am merely making a distinction between people like me and malu fernandez.
i am in no way justifying elitism at all. as one commenter at tingog has said, we all have the capacity, but not the condition of being (as fernandez).

i'm curious about your stand: is elitism justified when kept private? =)

Funny how some readers to not take context into account at all. Like those stupid anti-defamatory word software in websites that would disallow words like "Jack" and "beaver" because they had double-meanings even though they had valid uses.
reader,
If we need to spell it out for you, when Malu lambasted OFWs her context was to insult the OFWs. When sparks used the word "chimay" the context was to illustrate how Malu sees them.
Read it over and over so that you'd get it. Otherwise you're not a reader at all.

reader,
i used the word chimay consciously. domestics is too tame a word. i imagine that's how malu thinks of them anyway.

"chimay" is a gerogatory word that insults a lot of people, inluding numbers of OFWs.

Sometime back, i came across a more charitable reading of Maria Antionette's remark, explaining that the queen used that word because she did not know the vernacular for 'bread'.
