Gravatar i can't remember the reference. i think it came from tony campolo, but he gave a history of fundamentalism and what was fundamentalism at the turn of the century would be called liberalism today and we know that's not the case now.

Gravatar What you made me think of is that no matter what side of the political fence we're on, our most insidious sin is making idols of ourselves.

Gravatar ouch Emily.

Great post Rev Mommy!

Gravatar And I had a flash -- it's the message that Joel Osteen preaches! I went to the Lakewood Church website a while back and I had to dig around for the words "God" and "Jesus." They just aren't there. But the words "Joel Osteen" and "Ministries" are everywhere. There's no sin or judgement or even kingdom -- much less a Christ on a Cross -- suffering.

BUT Niebuhr's comment was made about the LIBERAL wing of the church -- and Osteen appeals to the conservative right. Wow!

I prefer to think of Osteen et al not as conservative, but consumerist.

Gravatar Preach it Sister!

They say great minds think alike. We must be great minds.

I came to the same conclusion a couple of weeks ago on my blog, and then found that others are doing the same (including Liberal Bloggers).
