A 17 year old Albany School District Student was arrested late this afternoon after he led police on a long foot chase and tried to discard a small handgun behind a Kent Street house.
Robert Perrin, of 100 Ontario Street was charged this evening with Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree. He will be arraigned in Albany City Criminal Court tomorrow morning.
The incident occurred at dismissal at Albany High School at 2:50 pm. Sergeant Erin Commerford was standing outside on the sidewalk with a school principal observing the students as they left school. The principal remarked to the Sergeant that Perrin, who was standing across the street, possibly matched the description of a student who was involved in an after school strong armed robbery of another student the day before. As Sergeant Commerford and the principal approached Perrin he took off running. Sergeant Commerford chased after him down Washington Avenue as other officers came to assist. Perrin ran over Partridge Street and then down Kent Street. As he ran down the block officers saw him throw a gun over a garage at 65 Kent Street. He then ran into the backyard of 67 Kent Street to hide. A K-9 Officer and his dog were called to the scene and found Perrin hiding behind the house. Officers searched and eventually found a small derringer handgun which was loaded and cocked ready to use.
After being caught Perrin was brought the Criminal Investigations Unit to be interviewed. He was questioned about the earlier robbery but was not cooperative.
