The object in question is a lamp. This type of lamp was used from pre-leterate times to the early 18oo's (in the US, they might still be used in the third world). In american vernacular they were called "Betty Lamps".
they were designed to burn any available fat or oil--from finest olive oil to bacon grease, or even tallow.
The groved proturbance would hold a wick, or even the pith from a dried reed. The fuel would go inside. If the fuel were solid at ambient temp, the heat from the wick would melt it, and then it would be absorbed by the wick and burned to produce light.
This item would have been the common lighting of a workingclass or poor home in biblical times.
That's right - A lamp - found all over the place with the other rubble in the middle east from the olden days.
