What's with Sarah Palin's resignation? I'm her biggest fan and therefore had hoped she would stay in the political arena and even move on to bigger and better things. Very disappointing but I'm sure her reasons were justified.

Detroit Public Schools, with great pomp, announced that for this summer they will be offering free summer school that will be accompanied by 3 square meals a day. Kids from all over Detroit will have the option to go to participating school buildings and take advantage of this program.
The local media reported this great news for a couple days straight.
Sounds benign doesn't it?
Well, almost a dozen kids have been shot this summer.
Why?
Different neighborhoods all going to the same school. Non stop gang land beef. We don't have sexy celebrity gangs like the Bloods or the Crips. Our gangs are simply named after roads or blocks. 7 Mile. Schoolcraft. etc.
7 kids were shot just today.
And people think new computer labs will fix education in Detroit.

Check out Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder, if you get a chance. He's a riot in that movie. In some ways, he's at his best when he's a supporting actor, when he can come in and steal a scene and then leave.
A year or so ago, CKB wrote a piece about the religious bigotry towards Scientology and Tom Cruise. I kind of laughed it off. A religion that is at its best a goofy fraternity of rich weirdoes, at its worst a blatant money scam, deserves to get a little ribbing.
After seeing Valkyrie and reading the story behind the making of the movie, I think CKB might be on to something.
Yeah, Tom Cruise can be an annoying corn ball. But it seems he’s getting a bunch of hate these days for no reason.
Germany at first refused Valkyrie to be shot on German soil because Cruise is a Scientologist. Apparently they didn’t see any irony in this.
The movie itself has been panned by many critics for the most superficial or ignorant of reasons. I read one idiotic review that deemed Valkyrie to be a Nazi apologist flick. Earth to dumb-ass: it’s about a plot to kill Hitler with a bomb.
Others nit picked Cruise because he didn’t have a German accent. After all, I’m sure everyone in the old Prussian officer corps spoke in English laced with a German brogue.
Then there were the critics that said Valkyrie was doomed from the start because we all know how it ends. I get the feeling these jerks wouldn’t have told John Wayne that he was wasting his time in The Alamo.
I thought the movie was good. Cruise played it damn well, totally absent of any “jumping on Oprah’s couch” vibe.
While I bet a sizeable chunk of Americans know that Hitler killed himself during the Soviet siege of Berlin, I guarantee the average American has no idea about the courageous assassination plot.
This is a story that needed to be told on the big screen. Props to Cruise for making it happen, despite the haters. Two thumbs up.
