Yeah, that's especially true with a team like the New Jersey Nets (NBA). The Nets have a player from China, Yi Jianlan. He's immensely popular among Asian fans, and they buy up jerseys with his name on the back, and the Nets games get televised in China, and Jianlan is a cash cow in that sense. The problem......Yi sucks as a player. He's a 7'1" nothing. He can run okay, but he can't shoot, he's a soft defender, and he can't rebound. And he gets hurt a lot. The team is clearly better when he's not on the court, but he started almost every game that he was able to last year (when he wasn't hurt), and I'm sure a big reason is because of the merchandising aspect.
sports is alot more about hype and marketing these days. most teams (superstar teams that is) are in debt but they're able to stay solvent because fans pay millions for mechandise, which the superstars help sell. so it's a gamble: let's pay this up and coming cuban $100 mil, and hope that he can last a season and sell enough merchandise (there are 2 million cubans in this country) so that we can at least recoup some of that. but there's also the media hype that goes along with it, etc. etc.

Aroldis Chapman. His agent (he already has one) claims he's 21, but in the World Baseball Classic he was listed as 26. The Yanks are interested in him, and they're eating up all the hype that the guy throws 101mph. The Yanks are so stupid about this stuff.....just watch, they'll sign him to a $100 million contract, and then the guy will turn out to throw around 92 or 93 (with limited movement). I've seen this happen so many times, it's almost become a comedy routine.....

Everybody's saying that the latest Cuban pitcher to defect throws 100mph. I've heard this so many times before, about some foreign guy being "the Japanese Nolan Ryan," or "the Cuban Nolan Ryan," or whatever, and I swear EVERY TIME it always turns out the same way.......he tops out at 93mph, and everybody wonders where all the missing miles per hour went.

LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!! You know - the painted on outfits (on some level) resonated with me - especially at the end when the female turned and walked down the aisle...I was like, "Uh, I think I see a crack and 2 buttcheeks pretty clearly!" - but I seriously thought they were all wearing wetsuits!! That is so funny. Serious subject but the joke is def. on us - the viewer/passenger! HA!
What a tepid weekend this is for summer blockbusters. Usually the July 4th weekend is the heart of the summer movie season, but this weekend the biggest release is Public Enemies (the movie about John Dillinger, starring Johnny Depp). I might be into that, but it's hardly Dark Knight kind of stuff, is it?
Back in the day I used to hang out with these dudes that worked for Northwest Airlines. Every weekend we would hang out with rowdy stewardesses.
Nobody could keep up with them. They could make Led Zeppelin look like wimps. The sun would come up, and off to work with smiles they would go. I remember we used to speculate which city they actually slept in, and couldn't for the life of us figure it out.
