I work as a field engineer for a tape library manufacturer, and I'll be glad to give you insights. Even if you don't use our products, I don't much care.

First thing is get ahold of a book called The Resillient Enterprise put out by Veritas Software Corporation. It talks about the whys and wherefores about building disiaster recovery into your IT infrastructure, with examples and examples of why you need to. Including when the WTC towers came down. If you can't find one, let me know your address and I'll get you one if i have to send you mine.
