You did the right thing. Once an animal on the side of the road decides to go, you can't repeal the laws of physics. That is small comfort, but look at it this way - you helped get this poor dog off the streets and put somewhere it might just have a chance at a better life.


We had a dog that lived with some renters on our ranch here in TX we called "rubber dog." After he got hit by 14 cars (they move FAST on soft shouldered, non-centerstriped roads) and ran under the big wheels on the back of the tractor 23 times, we stopped counting.

He may have just been dazed a bit, and could recover. (If he was starving, I doubt his owners are out looking for him, though.) At for his last days he'll probably be well fed and taken care of.


I hit and killed a dog once, and I was in a car that badly injured another. And those were two very very bad days. There's nothing like standing on a strange porch and hearing a child scream. Remembering it makes me sick to this day.
