Semi-related question - Which AR manufacturer generally has the best trigger? What I want is Alexander Arms in Beowulf .50, but since availability is somewhat limited, I'm thinking I'll buy a .223 (maybe Rock River), then order the Beowulf upper later.

HK mags have a known feeding problem as they age.

Chris, thanks for the good words about our Brownells mags. I had our magazine designer read it and he said you did very well as a general overview. Of course he went into lots of tiny details that would fascinate the geekiest of magazine fanatics. Here are a couple, you aluded to it but the whole list you gave, Colt, Simmonds, Universal, etc are all made by OK. There are only 3 current approved suppliers of magazines to the U.S. military, Brownells, Center and OK. Reject govt mags cannot be sold, they MUST be destroyed. The GI mags on the market probably walked out the back gate of a military base. They are a non-inventory item and can be replaced if a GI merely says, "I dropped 6 mags on the range today." After all, they're meant to be dropped in the field when empty (although in recent years they've been encouraged to save them because they were getting to be in short supply). On the poor aluminum in some mags, besides the alloy having to be 6061, the grain structure has to run a certain way. If it doesn't, the mag will come out of heat treating "looking like a pretzel" in our guy's words. And, the mil spec is for 6 welds, front and back. On followers, I wouldn't worry too much about color. We dye our 20 rounders black just because, we could make them the same green as our commercial 30s, which is not the same green we use for the military contract magazines. The follower design is more important than the color. Our guy incorporated many 30 round follower features in our 20 round follower and then put the 20 in some 30 round mags and fired them full-auto and had no feeding problems. Mag tests are boring. The gun is in a fixture, you plug a mag in, fire a couple of bursts then empty the mag full auto. Do that several times, switch guns, and do it again. All specifically spelled out in the test proceedure. Oh and the bending floorplates are indeed a money saving step which indicates you probably don't want the mag. Our guy says the metal is probably okay, it just hasn't been heat treated. Our bodies are stamped on an absolutely huge press, it takes that much to thin the overlap areas (where the welds are) to .030 from the orignal sheet thickness of .040. You can't simply fold the metal and weld it, a mag made that way will always be too long from front to back. Drop me an email Chris, and I'll get you his number if you ever want to get so deep into this stuff that you'll feel like you're buried. Again, a darn nice, very accurate overview. As a minor disagreement, I like the 30s for prone. With a Magpul or Arrendondo floorplate and two of them clamped side by side. They make a perfect height mono-pod for me. On a bench, you are so right about the 20s being better.

I've always wanted an AR, and though I am years away from affording one, I will definitely print this and keep it in the gun cabinet against the day I can.

I'm a huge fan of Magpul. I don't think I've seen a bad product come out of their shop yet, and their mags are just amazing if you ask me. I recommend them to anyone that doesn't know enough to make their own decision.

If I were to buy or recommend any AL mags, they would most certainly be Brownells. If you don't need the prancing horse to make you feel like you're not wasting money, I can't think of a better choice.

I'm gratified to find yet more confirmation that buying a trio of P-Mags was a Good Idea.

I've had very good results using DoubleStar Corp. (DSC) mags. They're located in Winchester KY and I've picked up many from them at a local gun show.

I don't know who the OEM is; they advertise that their magazines are "Made for DSC by military contractors to military specs" for whatever that's worth; at any rate I've never had a bad one from them yet.

They run about fifteen bucks each online, cheaper at the gun show.

Anywho, just passing along the info...

Guy at arms room window, after a day at the range: "Gee, Corp, I was having problems with my #@$%&@% rifle today, it kept $^@% jamming $#@%^ up."

Corp: "Well my son, did you have problems with a particular magazine?"

Guy: "I think there were two, mebbe three, but I can't remember which they were."

Corp: " Okay, lemme have your mags."

Guy: "How many?"

Corp: "All of em. Here's 7 new ones for ya."

Guy hands over the mags. With hardly a glance, 'Corp' drops them onto a steadily growing pile. Repeat this scene a dozen or more times. Cut to late that evening and there in the now (theoretically) quiet arms room we see 'Corp', 10lb sledge in hand setting each magazine from the pile carefully on an anvil and flattening it with a mighty blow. Well, not that mighty, they were made by the low bidder, don'tchaknow?

More than once the XO, aka provider of money for parts man went absolutely ape$^@# at the bite I put on his Class IX budget to replace magazines. But max out an AGI arms room inspection in all areas back in the 70's and the term golden boy doesn't do it justice. I ruled!

Life's too short to screw around with suspect mags.

Ours used to get "accidentally run over by truck"... or to be more specific "loss in field due to vehicular incident"

I'm stickin' with the 50 Colt mags that came with the .22 mags for my two M-261's adapters. There were advantages to being an RNCO.

Chris, thoughts on the MWG 90 round drum? It's about half the cost of the Betamag(about $124).

Junk. unreliable feeding, and even bulkier than the C mag.

Actually buying AR mags is much simpler than that:

go to .44mag.com, buy mags

NHMTG, C-products, D&H, or Magpull magazines are all good to go.

My personal preference is for the NHMTG mags with the magpull Gen-III followers, or the Magpull P-mags.

For P-mags, no one can beat AIM surplus, because Aim is offering 1 cent shipping. That means you can order one or two to try out, and not worry about trying to amortize the shipping by buying several.

Farmist, put a Rock River 2-stage Tuned Trigger in your Beowulf AR - $120 from White Oak.
All my AR mags are C-Products - they come with Magpul Gen-III followers.

Here in Israel, I carry a Colt M16A1, IDF issue. It was purchased by the IDF in the 70's.

It still has the original barrel, and rattles due to wear on the upper and pins.

It shoots great, is extremely accurate, and rarely jams. I use IDF issue aluminum 30 round magazines and almost never have problems.

RE: Magazine feed lips. Would it make any sense to copy the Tokarev pistol and incorporate the feed lips into the the receiver?
