Our state flag is a fairly unnerving demonstration of the motto. There's a native American in the middle of the flag, and what's over his head? A disembodied arm brandishing a sword, all ready to smite our native friend. I get the sense we're not seeking peace so much as pieces.

While I like Indiana's motto, we used to joke in high school that given the amount of constant roadwork, you needed a big stamp over the motto that says (UNDER CONSTRUCTION). And I like your comment about NH. It fits so well...

Actually, if you look at Virginia's state flag or state seal, you will understand that the correct translation of their motto is -

"Get your foot off my neck!"

Wyoming's motto is because they were the first state to allow women to vote, IIRC. Many of the Western states led the wayin that.
