I see some hands over here...

What a coincidence: that's the topic of all my blog posts. And most of my comments elsewhere.

Thanks for the shoutout. Although I don't remember what all I suggested for the shirts, I'm always glad to help today's youth. I do so love the younger people. Except when they don't vote my way in bracketed tournaments.

"Hey, why aren't these dates on the shirt?

February 20, 1834, Lowell, MA
July 19-20, 1848, Seneca Falls, NY
May 1, 1886, Chicago, IL
January 15, 1919, Boston, MA
May 4, 1970, Kent, OH"

So yes, as you can see, you done good Greg, all of them went on there.

Gravatar Your mention of the DBQ reminds me of something I wanted to ask you: my mom, who is an elementary school reading teacher, told me that 3rd graders are now required to do them as part of their standardized testing (this is in NY state). Thoughts on that?

Gravatar As a teacher, I have no issue with reading a document and extracting information out of it to form an opinion. In terms of standardized testing, it's actually easier to correct in terms of you can see where a kid is coming from in their answer and data intreprtation and analysis is an important skill.

That said, third grade? Eeep, I guess only if its age appropriate and graded as such.

Gravatar What are the odds Craig would know two guys named Greg Sorenson?

Chris

Gravatar I have to plead ignorance on the details of it - I don't talk to my mom all that much so I don't know. She definitely sees the worst of it as her job is to help kids who have trouble with reading, so many of the 3rd graders she's working with are still having a lot of problems with comprehension, so they don't even get to the analysis/interpretation part of it. Even the ones who aren't... this seems like a lot to ask of students who have only been reading for about 2 years.

It also seems crazy weird to me to have this in 3rd and then in 11th grade but never in between. If it's only going to be done twice, it seems like it would make more sense to have the first be in the middle school years.
