I see some hands over here...

1. There is no effing way that The Miracles are a 16 seed. That said, the Beach Boys in a walk.

2. Pass. Bob Seger would be the pick, but I've never seen them as a "band".

3. Much like Homer, I prefer to listen to Cheap Trick. I maintain that Verizon would have had a much more successful commercial if they had just played "I Want You To Want Me" over a black screen with the Verizon logo rather than some creepy stalkerish plot.

4. AC/DC. Depeche Mode is just weird.

Gravatar Dixville Notch in Texas? Maybe I'll beaten to the punch, but here goes:

Smokey Robinson & the Miracles - Eastern Seaboard roots lead to lower appreciation for surfing. The non-surfing songs by the BBs are fine, but I really like the Smokey Robinson sound.

Wilco - Yea alt-country!
Furthermore, since I'm from a Ford family, I can't vote for "Mr. Like a Rock".

Cream - Not a lot of longevity, but plenty of quality work. I wouldn't be heartbroken if Cheap Trick won, though.

AC/DC - Invoking the tiebreaker:
Bluegrass tribute albums: AC/DC - 1, Depeche Mode - 0

Gravatar The Beach Boys. Everytime I try to think of an argument against them I remember how oddly poignant I think the use of God Only Knows is at the end of Boogie Nights. Damn, that's good stuff.

Bob Seger. I don't care much for anything he's done except Night Moves. This vote's pure spite.

Cream. Clapton is (almost) god.

Depeche Mode. I might have to turn in my Heavy Metal Fan Club card for this one. AC/DC wrote a song back in the mid-1970's. It was a hit. They kept writing it for over 25 years. Enough already!

Gravatar 1.) Is it just me, or are the 16 seeds a hell of a lot more interesting/deserving than the 15 seeds? That said, the Beach Boys in a laugher.

2.) Well, gee. Do I vote for one of my two favorite bands, or for a band that's not one of my two favorites? Craig, you already know my vote.

And when did I help you pick out song highlights?! (Although, I gotta admit, you did get most've my favorites :D).

3.) Cheap Trick, easy. Clapton is a false idol! He is the golden calf of rock and/or roll!

4.) Depeche Mode -- more interesting, more fun, more everything than AC/DC is except "a mildly pejorative slang term for bisexuality."

Gravatar 1. Beach Boys, for Pet Sounds. I have to complain as well about seeding the greatest of the Motown bands 16th.
2. Wilco in one of the odder matchups I've ever seen.
3. Cream. WAYYYY better.
4. AC/DC. Depeche Mode is nothing compared to these dudes.

Gravatar I see we've reached what Greg and Dave have dubbed (and I agree with them) "The Bracket of Who Could Care Less." I don't think any of them belong in the final 8, but one of them has to be....interesting matchups though....

1. Smokey. I'm calling Harvard over Stanford here. Yes, Brian Wilson is important as a composer. I daresay Smokey Robinson is just as important. Remember that three-fourths of the Beach Boys' catalog is Chuck Berry bleached a paler shade of white.

2. OK, I'm coming clean. I've never heard anything by Wilco - or at least anything that I was aware was by them. I'm have no strong opinions either way about Bob Seger et. al. So I'm going to abstain. If I can get one of my co-workers to hook me up with some Wilco tomorrow to listen to, I might change this absention.

3. Damn this is close, and I'd rather have either of these two than either of the matchup below it. I really like Cheap Trick and think they deserve better than to be lumped in with the likes of REO Speedwagon. But Cream's power trio attack is just too much for the pride of Rockford to beat, despite a deeper bench. Eric Clapton may not be God, but he's a legend for a reason.

4. Blah. I'll give props to Angus Young for his inventive solos - the only inventive thing about AC/DC. I'll give propos to the late Bon Scott - did any rock frontman ever sound more like he was having the time of his life? I'll dock them points for, as Rick said, rewriting and re-releasing "Highway To Hell" every year for the last quarter century. That still leaves them ahead, because I have no use at all for Depeche Mode.

Gravatar Smokey
Wilco
Cheap Trick
AC/DC, even though Angus lately has been in serious need of some Ricola.

-MMM

Gravatar 1. The Beach Boys because of Tears of a clown.

2. Bob Seger

3. Since Derek and the Dominoes didn't make it, I'll give the nod to Cream

4. Depeche Mode as long as you can eliminate the line dancing from Personal Jesus.

Gravatar The Miracles. Because The Beach Boys are the band of Bob Greene. And because Smokey Robinson's name-drop in the Tom Tom Club's "Genius of Love" is more interesting than BNL's "Brian Wilson."

There are some Seger songs I don't mind, but I'd never own any. Wilco in a walk.

Gotta go with Cream here -- "Tales of Brave Ulysses" was used to much better effect in a Buffy episode than was Cheap Trick's version of the That 70's Show theme. And the studio version of IWYTWM is horrible. Just horrible. thank God for Budokan.

AC/DC. Depeche Mode makes me yearn to enjoy the silence.

Gravatar 1. Beach Boys
2. Bob Seger
3. Cream
4. AC/DC though I did gain a bit more respect for Depeche Mode when I saw Jonny Cash covered Personal Jesus. On the other hand I also liked his version as opposed to the original.

Gravatar The Miracles. If it weren't for Brian Wilson, the Beach Boys would be spoken of in the same breath as the Surfaris or Herman Ze German. With him, they produced mostly mediocre, mostly forgettable, mostly bubblegum pop. Despite Michael Moore's excellent ironic use of the Beach Boys in Roger & Me, wouldn't it be nice if the Miracles actually got a miracle?

Wilco. I'm in awe of any band that can (1) play country music, and (2) not suck.

Cream. Cheap Trick's fun to listen to, and I'll sing along to "Dream Police" or "Surrender," but Cream's got the musical chops and a nicely mesmerizing style.

Depeche Mode. Like the other three matchups today, we've got a "serious" band against a light-hearted, fun, outfit. I seem to be in a serious mood today.

And, for all that this is the Bracket of Who Could Care Less, looking around, I don't see any really weak bands except for the Beach Boys, who even noted soulless Republican goon James Watt tried to get yanked off-stage. Other than the California Steamin' Pile, it's fourteen solid musical acts and the terribly, terribly underrated Kinks.

Gravatar 1. Smokey Robinson and the Miracles.

2. Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band.

3. Cheap Trick.

4. AC/DC

Gravatar 1. Beach Boys. As a once and future resident of California, I'm obligated.

2. Wilco. I've only ever heard their album of Woody Guthrie songs, but that's enough for me.

3. Cheap Trick. The first album (OK, cassette) I ever owned was either "Lap of Luxury" or The Fat Boys' "Comin' Back Hard Again". I can't remember which of the two was first, but I can tell you which one I still own. "Don't Be Cruel" remains my favorite Elvis cover (though the Dead Kennedys' "Viva Las Vegas" from Fear and Loathing is close).

4. AC/DC, because I won't dance to anything by Depeche Commode.

Gravatar Smokey - looking for a Coppin State/SC matchup...

Seger

Cream

AC/DC

~ Tricia ~

Gravatar 1.I wish I could vote for both...but I'll second that emotion and go with the Miracles

2. Wilco, without a doubt, I have been obsessed with this band for WAY too long

3. cream

4. This match-up a bit tricky, but I will defer to my 'more-good-memories-associated-with-this-band' voting technique and go AC/DC (we're talking keggers in the middle of a corn field good memories)
