I see some hands over here...

Gravatar Dang...had I known Dixville Notch had moved to Pennsylvania, I'd have said something witty.

Nirvana.

Buddy Holly and the Crickets.

Sex Pistols. Both of these bands are overrated in their own way, but only one gave direction and a face to an entire movement.

Queen. On top of their respective games both bands are worthy, but I'll take Queen's overwraught worst over Billy's cat-yowlling worsy anyday.

Gravatar 1. Nirvana. I think we all know why.

2. Tough call. Buddy Holly - The Crickets were much more of a band than The Revolution was. Both were important, but I think Holly's footprint was bigger.

3. As influential as the Pistols were...well, Duran Duran had more musical talent and spent more time in the spotlight. Now _that_ is a sentence I never thought I'd have to type. Give me the Double Ds.

4. Queen. I love SP, but they just don't have the volume to compete here.

Gravatar 1.) Nirvana. And if Journey wins this . . . well, I'm no good with empty threats, but I'll be a sad panda.

2.) Wow. I'll go with Prince, but this is a good matchup.

3.) I voted for the Monkees against Duran Duran in round 1 to try to set up the comedy "Monkees/Sex Pistols" matchup. This is almost as funny, and almost as obvious. Sex Pistols.

4.) Ick. Two bands I really don't care about. I think I could get through the entire Smashing Pumpkins greatest hits album without poking out a tympanum, so I guess I'll vote for them.

Gravatar Journey, for these reasons:

1. Getting more attention is not the same as starting something. Seattle was Minneapolis circa 1986, only with airplay.

2. I feel very dirty, but this is one case where I cannot resist the cheeze that is Journey.

3. The video games -- two completely different ones for Atari and the arcade.

Prince was with the Revolution longer than Buddy Holly was with the Crickets (and don't blame the plane crash, either -- Holly dropped them in 195. I'll take the Purple One, if only because during this stretch he recorded my favorite of his songs, "17 Days" (B-side to "When Doves Cry")

Pistols. Duran Duran did NOT have more talent than the Sex Pistols. Better hairstylists, maybe. "Pretty Vacant" sums up D2 all too well.

Queen, for having a sense of humor.

Gravatar 1. Journey. Because I spent hours playing Journey Escape on Atari and can still hear the 2600 version of Don't Stop Believin' if I think about it. And because everybody needs to re-read the rules--influence, talent (in the abstract), etc. have NOTHING TO DO WITH IT! It's about what you actually like to listen to.

2. Buddy Holly, because even "That'll Be The Day" is 100 times less egotistical than that annoying little purple gnat.

3. Traffic is very tempting here, but I suppose under duress I'd pick Duran Duran, if only because it makes me think of Jane Fonda's Barbarella outfit.

4. Queen. This is the hardest matchup of the tournament for me, but I'd say I'd choose Queen about 55% of the time, so that's my vote.

Gravatar Okay Stepson of Troy, we've had just about enough purple bashing. I'm sure you're very scarred because of some perceived infliction of Prince music, but believe me it was for your own good.

That being said.

1. Journey- As they say on stiffs.com Kurt Cobain...still dead.

2. Prince- Hands down.

3. Hmmm, Duran Duran.

4. Queen- good memories of their songs, although the Pumpkins version of Landslide is also good.

Gravatar 1. Journey---
2. Buddy Holly and the Crickets...not becuase of their Influence, but because I genuinely prefer the music over Prince.
3. Duran Duran
4. Going with Queen here....

Gravatar No time for witty banter since, unlike most people, I have a job where a failure of planning on someone else's part does constitute an emergency on my part. And someone else's failure of planning was epic in scale.

Nirvana
Prince
Duran Duran
Queen

Gravatar 1. Nirvana. Because Journey made them necessary.
2. If, according to Greg, Seattle was Minneapolis 1986, then the vote has to go Prince and the Revolution.
3. The Sex Pistols. This is based on the rest of their work. Although "Ordinary World" trumps "God Save the Queen", the remainder of the Duran Duran catalog is just embarassing next to the remainder of the Sex Pistols catalog.
4. Queen. Because when I knew people starting bands, they all seemed to be doing Queen pastiches.

Gravatar Journey. Now and forever. Wither thou Steve Perry?

Abstain. Both have solo vs. band issues, but because I feel Prince is a genius and Buddy Holly a true pioneer, I can't bring myself to vote against either of them.

The Sex Pistols. Of the big time 80s bands, Duran Duran's music has aged the worst. Take a real close look at that song list. It's not nearly as good as you remember.

Queen. The unfortunate co-option of "We Will Rock You" by every sports team ever has overshadowed the fact that May's ending guitar solo is one of the all-time classics.

Gravatar Keeping it simple through happy coincidence, the votes go to the higher seeds.

Nirvana
Holly
Duran Duran
Queen

Gravatar Nirvana
Buddy Holly (Peggy Sue never masturbated to a magazine, nor has she ever started to Grind.)
Duran Duran
Queen
