I see some hands over here...

Gravatar 1. What's My Age Again. Hooray for immaturity!
2. There she goes. Screw Lenny Kravitz.
3. I'm gonna say "The Freshmen" in a squeaker, and you better be joking about the Batman line, otherwise I'll question your mental health.
4. Two Princes. Viva los Spin Doctors.

Gravatar Meta-question: Which voting method is easier on the tabulator? I always e-mailed my 128-song votes; maybe this time around I'll always use the widget.

1. "Groove is in the Heart": Unofficial first-song-of-the-party song of the Harvard band circa 1992-94, before a whole lot of fabulous people graduated.

2. Oncoming traffic

3. Oncoming traffic... on further review, make that "Kiss From A Rose." I'd listen to that.

4. Um, well... oncoming traffic

Maybe I didn't like modern rock as much as I thought I did. If you were on the selection committee, please don't take it personally.

Gravatar The answer to the first question has to be Nebraska.

1. Blink 182 - "Groove" gives me stomach cramps.
2. Fly Away - The first "meh" matchup.
3. Kiss From A Rose - Beautiful, particularly when done a cappella.
4. Two Princes - Official Salesianum Model UN song of 1992-93. Don't ask. No one knows why.

Gravatar 1. Groove Is in the Heart-- I recall being in love with the music video for this song for some reason.

2. Fly Away--By default. I have to admit, I have heard of neither the La's nor "There She Goes."

3. The Freshman--Seal is just another supposedly soulful singer whose vocal gyrations come across as so much whining.

4. Two Princes--I rather fancy the "Pocket Full of Kyrptonite" album. Plus, in my most recent trip overseas, the video for "Song 2" was seriously overplayed, on par with the most popular boy bands.

Gravatar 1. Grove is in the Heart. While I don't particularly like the song, it brings back fond memories of singing and dancing to it in front of thousands of Chinese students.

2. There She Goes

3. Kiss From a Rose

4. Two Princes!

Gravatar Blink-182
The La's
The Freshmen
Spin Doctors - I hear enough of Song 2 whenever someone scores at the HSBC Arena, or the Corel Centre, or any other ballpark or stadium.

Gravatar Dee-Lite, "Goove is in the Heart." "What's My Age Again?" has always bugged me. I was probably to mature to fully appreciate it when it was released.

The Las, "There She Goes." What is it about songs with the word "fly" in the title? If any song was more overplayed in the 90s than "Fly Away," it was Sugar Ray's "Fly."

Seal, "Kiss From a Rose." Just because I like it better.

Spin Doctors, "Two Princes." It's too bad the Blur representative in the tournament is the deeply annoying "Song 2." But I do like "Two Princes," so I feel OK about voting for it.

Gravatar Blink 182, the song whose title I always misremember.

Kravitz.

Seal. He could sing the phonebook and make it sound sexy.

Two Princes, if only to not break up the shutout.

-MMM

Gravatar 1. "Groove Is In The Heart": It's just so fun; I can't think of another song that sounded like it, and uniqueness often earns points.

2. "Fly Away": It was the first of Lenny Kravitz's streak of *four in a row* Male Rock Vocal Performance Grammys, and in my opinion, the most deserved. Fun driving song, late at night . . .

3. "Kiss From A Rose"; I like how Seal used the medieval melody and updated it. Seal is just amazingly sexy. Much sexier than "The Freshman", which, as I recall, was about a girl being passed around a frat house? That was just creepy.

4. "Two Princes", but as Hayden would put it, rather meh-ly.

Gravatar Groove, no question about it. This is one of my favorite songs ever. No, I'm not ashamed. Besides, Blink-182 is such 15-year-old boy music.

There She Goes, but only the original verson . . . every cover I've heard has annoyed me. But Lenny Kravitz annoys me way more than any of those covers. I don't know if it's the pants or the hair or what.

Kiss From a Rose, please. If I never hear anything by the Verve Pipe ever again, it'll be way too soon. Damn whiny-ass man.

This one is the only one of this group that isn't a complete no-brainer for me. I'll have to go with the Spin Doctors, because of the overplay issue with Song2. I want to make it clear, however, that there is nothing wrong with Damon Albarn bouncing around. But I'm still lookin' for the one who wants to buy me rockets. I still haven't found what I'm . . .(wrong tourney)

~AgAK, uncommonly curmudgeonly today

Gravatar Groove. I just never got Blink. I think they were the first big band after I started getting old.

Oncoming Traffic. Both songs make me want to stick hot pokers in my ears.

Kiss from a Rose. Very happy memories of this song...and not for the reasons you'd think.

Two Princes. It's got a better beat and I can dance to it.

Gravatar I feel sorry voting against a song so brilliantly covered by Richard Cheese ("What the hell is 'Ad?'"), but the World Clique (assisted by Bootsy and Q-Tip) have a few more things going for them than the pop-punk upstarts. How do you say...Dee-Lite?

If you ever develop an annoying rash that you can't get rid of, you might want to call it Lenny Kravitz. I would.

Seal's recorded some good tunes, but I don't consider this to be one of them, so my vote goes to The Verve Pipe. (Craig, did you say "Batman Forever" is the best one because it has U2 on the soundtrack, or because the Batsuit had nipples?)

Man, this is such an unfair matchup: the best thing recorded by the Spin Doctors going up against (overplayed) Blur. Under other circumstances, I'd go with the Spin Doctors, but Damon Albarn's worth more than a Pocketful of Kryptonite. Blur gets my vote just on principle.

Gravatar Well, the U2 helps, but it's more about Nicole Kidman, "Your entrance was good, his was better...the difference...showmanship!", and the more comic book vis a vis graphic novel feel of the film.

Gravatar ...and my unfinished list of song suggestions sits in my draft box. I'm certain Murphy and VGroce have represented my sentiments in some manner. Now then:

"Groove is in the Heart" -- Even the wife agrees that Miss Kier in a velvet catsuit beats the naked Blinkers. The death of Joe Strummer makes the lameness of today's MTV-ready faux-punk sting even more.

"There She Goes", in a walk. Kravitz has one good song, and this ain't it.

"Kiss From A Rose," but Batman Returns was the best Bat-movie (unless you want to get into Mask of the Phantasm), and had the best song from the franchise in that Siouxsie and the Banshees number.

"Song 2." Aren't both of these in the Jukebox from Hell?

Gravatar 1. What's My Age Again. You gotta love the line, "The state looks down on sodomy."

2. There She Goes. Kravitz tries a little too hard to be Jimi.

3. The Freshmen. Seal blows.

4. 2 Princes.

Gravatar Greg, if your votes are any indication, don't worry. We gotcha all taken care of.

About the college football thing -- what about the Rainbows? Hawaii may be small, but it's still a state!

m- V.

Gravatar 1. What's My Age Again?

2. Oncoming Traffic.

3. The Freshman. This came out while I was a freshman in high school, so I get all nostalgic and whatnot.

4. Two Princes.

Gravatar 1) Deee-Lite's "Groove is in the Heart" How can you vote against the techno fusion song? I think I see a Sweet Sixteen entry here!

2) Lenny Kravitz's "Fly Away"

3) Seal's "Kiss From a Rose" In a walkover...this is like a #1 seed versus a #16.

4) Blur's "Song 2" in a vote AGAINST Spin Doctors (blech!)

Gravatar 1) Gotta go with "What's My Age Again", although when cross referencing the voting criteria it may be because I was 8 when "Groove is in the Heart" was popular.
2)I have nothing but bad memories asso=ciated with either song, but if I had to pick, I would go with Lenny Kravitz.
3) Although I agree with the statements about Batman, "Kiss From a Rose" does not make my list of favorite A/C Jams. And "The Freshmen" will (at least in my mind) have a longer run on my list og great songs of yesterday. And as a disclaimer I would like to add that my being a Spartan has nothing to do with my choice.
4)I have to say Song 2. Based on the fact that I took a class at scraft once where I was forced to listen to nothing but Spin Doctors for 2 weeks, and Song 2 is just straight up a better jam tune.

Gravatar Regarding : "Is there any other football mad state where one and only one D-I college team holds sways over the residents like the *uckeyes do over Ohio?"

Oh come on... NEBRASKA. I suppose Oklahoma has a grip too except that Tulsa and OK State are decent every once in a while. Colorado is perhaps a runner-up. But I'd pretty much say Nebraska is about as bad to almost much worse that The OSU football-wise.

Gravatar 1. Groove is in the Heart
2. Fly Away
3. Kiss From a Rose
4. Two Princes

Gravatar Deee-lite
