I see some hands over here...

Hm... 1. Jealousy
2. Misery
3. Breakfast at Tiffany's. Fo some reason it is very catchy.
4. I'll Stand By You.

Not much thought into any of the choices. Some of the choices would be based on which song I hadn't heard in a while and so wanted to hear I guess.

1. Jealousy. You're right, Craig - Natalie Merchant does have tremendous legs.
2. Misery. Just like it better.
3. I'm going to lose 487-1, but it's DMB. Search your heart, you know it to be true.
4. Oncoming, vicious aardvarks.

Hey, I can have my choices rhyme, can't I?

Gravatar 1. Jealousy

2. Misery

3. Ants Marching, because I'm probably the only person on earth who likes to air-violin that solo.

4. Molly (Sixteen Candles) because I haven't heard that song since sometime in 1998, and it brings back fond memories of sixth grade.

Gravatar "Jealousy"
"Fade Into You"

"Ants Marching" - It's a battle of my adopted hometowns (C'Ville vs. Dallas), but I'll take the DMB over DBS, despite the presence of a former UVA quizbowl member in a crowd scene of the "Breakfast" video.

"I'll Stand By You" - If only "Molly" drew "Breakfast @ Tiffany's" in Round 1.

Gravatar 1. none of the above. i am less than impressed. it is like they are stuck, waiting for some musical savior to come rescue them, and his name is Nelly.
2. Misery. Talk about the soundtrack of suck. I feel bad for you if these songs define your life.
3. Ants marching. I love Breakfast at Tiffany's (and the movie) but Ants is more enduring.
4. Sponge. I preferred "See mary" and "wax estatic" myself, but this is sweet. and like Jay and Silent Bob, I will gladly dis John Hughes any day.

Gravatar 1. U2, only because I don't like "Jealousy". Alanis Morissette covered the same theme exponentially more effectively in "You Oughta Know".

2. "Fade Into You". The music makes this one of the sexiest songs ever.

3. ONCOMING TRAFFIC I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE both of these songs!

4. Eh, abstain.

Gravatar 1. Natalie Merchant
2. Mazzy Star
3. Deep Blue Something
4. Sponge

Gravatar 1) Gotta say Jealousy. I'm not much of a U2 fan. A disgrace, I know.
2)Misery. I just love songs like that.
3)Ants Marching, and I am not a DMB fan... but Breakfast at Tiffanys is STILL overplayed.
4)I'll Stand By You. That song has a special place in my heart.

Gravatar I'm embarrassed to admit that I can't remember either of the first two off the top of my head, so I'll abstain.

Gotta go with "Misery" here. Actual fans of the old Soul Asylum probably would tell me that they'd lost their edge by this point, but I always liked this tune, and it didn't get overplayed the way "Runaway Train" did.

DBS. The closest George Peppard connection to "Ants Marching" is probably the parking garage/mutant cockroaches scene in "Damnation Alley." I pity the fool who disrespect Hannibal!

This is the toughest matchup in Round 2, but I'm going with Sponge. I adore the Wakko quality the dude's voice takes on when he sings "Sixteen candles down the drain." Also, it makes me want to hop around like a silly little monkey when I hear the guitar break.

Gravatar Merchant, "Jealousy" and Soul Asylum, "Misery." But only because I'm trying to make a point of voting for every matchup.

DMB, "Ant's Marching." I like both songs pretty much equally, but I'm not sure I think "Breakfast at Tiffany's" is a rock song.

Sponge, "Molly (Sixteen Candles)." The Prentenders is one of those band that just makes me say, "eh."

Gravatar 1. Oncoming Traffic. I might have actually voted for U2 here if the movie it was from hadn't sucked so hard.

2. Mazzy Star, believe it or not, and hometown roots be damned. Soul Asylum and their suckiness throughout the 90s has served one purpose: to show me the silver lining of the Replacements' breakup

3. Oncoming Traffic. God, maybe the 90s were worse than the 80s after all.

4. Sponge. To contrast with Bonnie's sixth-frickin-grade memories, my memory of this song is listening to it in the car on the way to Philadelphia Experiment 2, marking my debut on the QB "masters" scene.

Gravatar 1) Natalie Merchant's "Jealousy" - No discernable reason...

2) Soul Asylum's "Misery" - See above

3) Deep Blue Something's "Breakfast at Tiffany's" - Decent song and I work at a college which means I am bombarded daily with "DMB is God" crap from my students. Ugh. There is one God, and his nickname is Slowhand...get it through your durg-fogged minds. Almost as much a vote against DMB as a vote for DBS. (Cranky old man signing off!)

4) The Pretenders' "I'll Stand By You" - One of the truly underated bands of all time. Chrissy Hynde's vocals always stand out.

Gravatar 1. Jealousy, because someone has to stand in front of the tank that is U2.

2. Fade Into You, no good reason really.

3. Breakfast at Tiffany's, the only song of today's 8 I legitimately like.

4. Bland vs. not sure I've ever heard it. I'll pass on this one.

Gravatar Oops, sorry, that should be:

2. Misery

Still no good reason really--I just got the titles mixed up.

Gravatar 1. I wish both of these songs could be involved in a car crash. Especially if one of the cars is filled with TNT.
2. See 1.
3. Breakfast at Tiffany's due to being completely sick of all DMB songs.
4. See 1.

Too bad I didn't vote in the first match-up...at least that one had some songs I didn't detest...

Gravatar Watch me be in the minority on all four of these...

1. U2 despite my honestly not remembering a thing about this song (think of it as a vote for the band and against "Jealousy")

2. Soul Asylum

3. Deep Blue Something
"She said 'I remember that film, ah yes I recall now, I think we both kind of liked it.' I said, 'well, that's one thing we got.'"
(I declare neutrality on DMB)

4. Sponge
And a pox on terrible songs (here "I'll Stand By You") that get stuck in one's head.

Gravatar 1. Natalie Merchant - Jealousy
Here's hoping "Stay (I Missed You)" by Lisa Loeb and Nine Stories meets "Hey Jealousy" by Gin Blossoms somewhere in the tournament.

2. Soul Asylum - Misery

3. Dave Matthews Band - Ants Marching - DBS = Just plain too negative.

4. Sponge. When Sony sent the "Rotting Pinata" album to radio stations, they filled the envelopes with candy corn, to match the album cover. Very clever, and very messy, when the candy corn melted in the summer heat. That's good enough for me to vote for 'em here.

-MMM

Gravatar Jealousy, my junior year roommate tried to learn to sing and play guitar via Stay, bad flashbacks all around.

Misery

Breakfast at Tiffany's, if only for the great QB moment where the following exchange occurred.
"Deep Blue Something"
"But what?"
"Deep Blue Something"
"Yes, Deep Blue WHAT?"
"The name of the band is DEEP...BLUE... SOMETHING!"
"Captain, your answer."
"Deeeep....Bluuuuuuuue...DESIGNATE!"

I'll Stand By You

Gravatar Just the bang and the clatter as I vote for the U2 song that I feel belongs to me, if only for the first verse. Between the memories I've got tied up in this song and the simple beauty of the song, I'm all for staying wherever Bono wants me to.

Fade Into You. Once again, lotsa memories here. Mazzy Star, closed door, lights out, someone I shouldn't have been with, things I shouldn't have been doing. Also, I did tell our esteemed tournament director that Somebody to Shove should've been on here instead of this, but . . .

Breakfast at Tiffany's. Ants Marching is NOT one of the two DMB songs that does NOT cause me to curse the radio's ancestry and turn to something, anything else. Besides, now that the initial overplay of Breakfast at Tiffany's has worn off, I can appreciate it for what it is: a cute, whimsical little song.

Sponge. This one is tough. I feel disloyal voting against a fellow NE Ohio girl, but this isn't my favorite Pretenders song. Besides, I always thought it hilarious that Sponge swore this song wasn't about what we all knew it was about.
