I see some hands over here...

1. Black. Torn was overplayed and has now become annoying.
2. Tonic. The bare-bones intro seals it.
3. Counting Crows. At Salesianum, the quizbowl team finished fourth in the state my senior year. This became an unofficial team anthem.

That, and I don't run.
4. Take a Picture. Don't like it as much as CDB, but it deserves one round.

1. Torn. But I think Ms. Imbruglia, suffering from the tarring of all Aussie soap stars-turned-singers, would be echoing DEK and saying "Damn you, Kylie Minogue" were she to see the results of this vote.

2. If You Could Only See.

3. Mr. Jones. So, he wants to be Bob Dylan. I want to be Adam Duritz. Well, I want to be Adam Duritz during the time he was shagging Jennifer Aniston.

4. Enjoy the Silence.

Gravatar Is it just me or are these matchups all way way WAY WAY better than Day 1?

1. "Black"

2. "Connected"

3. "The Distance" -- my darkhorse to go all the way. I'd vote five times for it if I could.

4. Never once in the 128-song tournament did I damn Clippy but YOU RAT BASTARD!!!!! I refuse to vote against either of these songs in the first round. Please put me down once in each category. It's vote inflation, I know, but I insist all the same.

Gravatar 1. Black
2. If You Could Only See.
3. The Distance, if only because I so utterly hate Mr. Jones.
4. Take a Picture.

Gravatar 1) I never much cared for Pearl Jam until I heard "Black" the first time. It starts off like probably a million other songs, but it spins around and around like some horrible whirlpool of anguish. Eddie finally breaks down into complete hysterics somewhere around 3:38. I'd gladly listen to uninventive two-chord rock that was performed with half of the sincerity that you can hear in this one: you can tell when a vocalist means what they're singing and when they're just going through the motions. "Black" deserves to go farther into the tournament than it probably will.

2) Both of these songs are pretty irritating, but "If You Could Only See" seemed less so, so that gets my vote.

3) "Mr. Jones." Never cared much for Cake: they just seemed like great proof that nearly anybody could get a recording contract, and we all knew that anyway.

4) Depeche Mode. I'll probably have a weblog posting to supplement my vote.

Gravatar Abstain. I don't think I could pick "Black" out of a lineup.

Stereo MC's. "If You Could Only See" is a whiny piece of Complaint Rock.

I've erred -- "Brown-Eyed Girl" is not the worst Van Morrison song. "Mr. Jones" is the worst Van Morrison song. Cake all the way.

The Filter tune is nothing special, but I'd rather enjoy silence than listen to this particular Depeche Mode song, so there you go.

Gravatar "Black." I'm not a big Pearl Jam fan, but "Torn" is just ew.

"Connected." It's an age thing: I have no particular affinity for one song over the other, but the novelty of hearing "Connected" on the radio in 2003 would make me stop and listen.

"The Distance." I never liked "Mr. Jones" that much anyway, but it was so overplayed that I soon lost any affection I had for it.

"Take a Picture." I am entirely indifferent to both songs in the fourth matchup. I'm casting my vote for Filter in the hope that later in the tournament I'll have the chance to vote for a Depeche Mode song I like better than "Enjoy the Silence"

Gravatar 1. In the summer of '98 "Torn" was just starting to go away on the stations I was listening to, and good riddance. Then I left to bum around Europe for a month, and it seemed that Torn was peaking at just the right time for me to hear it incessantly in every country I went to. Grrrr! That said, I have this strange quirk whereby about 6 months after mega-airplay songs finally go away, I start to miss them and really enjoy hearing them from time to time. So I'm voting for Torn.

2. Abstain--bland vs. doesn't ring a bell, and the computer where I'm working can't work Craig's sound clips.

3. In the summer of '94 when this song was in heavy airplay, I was hanging around with an interesting crowd. One of my best friends from high school had just come out, and we spent a good bit of the summer tooling around with this big butch dyke he had tried to hook me up with before he realized that she was gay and I had standards. But she had a really great car, so she drove, and whenever "Mr. Jones" came on she would turn the volume way up and shout, "I wanna be Bob Dylan," even though she honestly didn't. Buffy, this vote is for you: Mr. Jones. Oh, and still just this past Saturday I made the joke that New York Football Giant Dhani Jones wants to be Bob Dylan, so this one has legs.

4. Filter. Silence would, in fact, be the only thing I would enjoy from Depeche Mode.

Thanks for the memories Craig!!

Gravatar 1) Torn.
2)Connected. Its a better Jam song. And Tonic has much better songs than that.
3) Mr. Jones. Who doesn't have great memories associated with that song?
4) here is where I abstain. I don't really like either song.

Gravatar 1) Natalie Imbruglia's "Torn" - I would stop on both songs, but I have to be in more of a "rock" mood for "Black."

2) Tonic's "If You Could Only See" - Another one where I would stop on both, but Stereo MC's is more of a specific mood song.

3) Counting Crows' "Mr. Jones" - Now I'm just out to spite Greg S. and cancel his votes.

4) Depeche Mode's "Enjoy the Silence" - 4 for 4 against my fellow Gerbil. I believe I prefer the more mainstream to his choices.

I alos agree that this collection of matchups is superior to the first couple of days.

Gravatar "Black". "Torn" speaks to me, and that's not a good thing when you consider the lyrics.

"Connected". Surprisingly, the dance tune is the less repetitive song in this pairing.

"The Distance". Even if "Mr. Jones" hadn't been overplayed to hell and back, Cake would still be a much better band with a much cooler song.

"Enjoy the Silence". I like Filter better than Depeche Mode, but not this Depeche Mode song versus that Filter song.

Despite the way I voted, I am not coming to the aid of my fellow TRASH member against his fellow Gerbil. Well, not intentionally, anyway.

Gravatar 1. Torn
2. Abstain
3. The Distance. By FAR the best song today.
4. "Take a Picture" i guess.

Gravatar Pearl Jam
