I see some hands over here...

1. Since I was in a car that inflicted This American Life on me, I've grown to despise both They Might Be Giants and Sarah Vowell.
So, My Own Worst Enemy it is.
2. Wicked Game. Its success had a little to do with Wild at Heart, but a lot more to do with that video with Helena.
3. Ooh. Tough. But "One Week" is pop at its infectious, intelligent best.
I will sing Least Complicated more in the shower, though.
4. Van Halen is someday going to go to Hell for licensing this song to Pepsi. But they win this round.

1. Jesus. Two bands that won't get their respect otherwise. I'll go with Lit. Much more fun to sing to.
2. Kiss Me. God their lead singer was cute until she cut her hair. Chris Isaak wigs me out a bit. Even if his guest role on Friends ruled.
3. One Week. Although dude, Sailor Moon? So many good references, even if it was overplayed.
4. Good ones, but I probably am the biggest Fastball fan here so "The way it is". Great song, and any band that can name themselves after a porn movie and feel secure with it is ok by me.

I mention the possibility of an evil Clippy alliance and I could go either way on 3 of the 4 choices today. Figures.
Birdhouse - Only because Car Toys, a local car audio retailer, now makes me reflexively change the station after they borrowed the opening riff from "My Own Worst Enemy".
Sixpence - A little shout out to New Braunfels (just between Austin and San Antonio), and that lead singer has such a great voice.
One Week - This is the one easy choice of the day, possibly given that the Indigo Girls are a little too much on the "folk" side for my tastes.
The Way - A fun song from beginning to end, while "Right Now" loses a bit towards the end. Still a close call though, especially since you brought up Crystal Gravy (TM). Aside: Come to think of it, Crystal Gravy sounds like someone who could have been in the movie "Fastball".

Just to get you up to speed, the Raleigh Entertainment and Sports Arena was recently renamed (thanks to corporate naming rights) as the RBC Center.
They Might Be Giants
Sixpence
Indigo Girls (because I guess someone should vote for them, and folk isn't that bad)
Van Halen.

TMBG. Love the song, but there have been very very few songs in the tournament so far that would have lost to Lit.
Chris Isaak. And I agree, it was the video more thanthe movie. RIP, Herb Ritts.
Barenaked Ladies. No offense meant to the Girls, but I just don't think "Least Complicated" is their strongest work. Nor, of course, is "One Week" BNL's, but it's catchy and fun and I like to listen to it.
Fastball. Van Halen reached no. 2 on the Modern Rock chart? Van Halen? Now I know when the phrase "modern rock" lost all meaning.

Looks like the theme today is "early '90s, late '90s." So I'm going early, early, early, late. We'll conveniently forget that I was a preteen when most of these came out!

TMBG. please! Remind me never to get in a car with Hayden.
Chris Isaak. I don't creep out easily, but I will never watch Wild At Heart again, that's for sure. I'm pretty sure the prom song in She's All That was Fatboy Slim's "The Rockefeller Skank," but I will defer to Craig and his deep knowledge of all things Freddie Prinze Jr.
BNL had jumped the shark long before this one, but they still get my vote. I could never deal with the Indigo Girls, particularly after hearing their abortion of a cover of Dire Straits' "Romeo and Juliet." Besides, I'm not this guy.
Fastball. Van Hagar was a big blackhole of suckiness.

Hi, Craig. Jukebox From Hell is back today, BTW...
1. "Birdhouse" The one TMBG song that I can sorta tolerate over Lit, who have zero songs I can tolerate.
2. "Wicked Game" It's a great song even without the video.
3. "One Week" Because I want to put a samurai in my films too.
4. "The Way" Love the "Right Now," video, but Crystal Pepsi? Ugh. Besides, "Exit to eternal summer slacking" is a cooler lyric than anything Sammy Hagar ever wrote.

Greg,
You are of course, correct about the song for the dance number in She's All That.
But the prom's "theme" as seen in the trailers and film was "Kiss Me", which lead to all kinds of schools going Sixpence for their 1998 Theme. Stevenson, though, I have been informed by the official sister of the Commish (SHS Class of `98 ) was previous Modern Rock song tournament entrant "I'll Stand By You."
Which is a lot better than the theme of the 1996 SHS Prom, the Peter Cetera/Crystal Bernard train wreck (I Wanna Take) Forever Tonight, which might explain my emnity towards both Chicago and Wings. Also, because of my exhaustive campaign for "All I Want is You", I was disappointed, largely because I was told during a meeting "Barker, you wouldn't know a good song if it bit you in the ass."
