"As an aside, Microsoft is already expressing its concern and wondering whether it should take some sort of action." Ah, great chance for MS to look like they care about their customers security. An are'nt they a little pissed about Sony's (and Apple's) online music service as well? That's two flies in one hit!
Why nobody is asking why this rootkit is even possible is beyond me... does it have any useful purpose?

The rootkit enforces the anti-copying terms of the CD, namely, it only allows you to make two copies of it. But because it is a rootkit, it also opens up an opportunity for other security problems, as noted by my post.
So yes, Windows shouldn't allow rootkits, and yes, Sony is evil in installing them. But as you can read in my latest post, it's even worse than that -- it installs kernel extensions on Apple Macs as well.
The technology strategy is bad, but the marketing strategy is worse, in my opinion.
Thanks for the thoughts -- Carl.
