What you say makes sense. But, I came here because you mentioned the word Chinese and I am trying to figure out whether the long tail applies to China. My thought is that it doesn't yet. Do you have a thought on this?

Wow, that's an intriguing question.
My belief: the long tail does apply to China, but not to the same extent yet. Why? Simple: broadband Internet and eCommerce penetration isn't yet to the same level as it is in the US. That said, there are 100 million Internet users in China already, so they are starting to some see long-tail effects which tend to be driven by eCommerce sites with near-infinite choice. However, that 100 million Internet users is only a small part of the overall population, so as a country, China still acts a bit more like a mass market culture rather than a long tail one.
Still, China's day is coming, and I expect the long tail to have just as large an effect there as here. And when it does, it will be very interesting to see if the cultural and business changes are as dramatic as we are seeing here.
Thanks for the comment and the fascinating question. I'm going to give that one more thought.
Best,
Carl
