Always enjoy your commentary Carl. Interesting that Apple should pre-announce a product before it's even got a final nomenclature. Does Q1 '07 mean a MacWorld release? With more studios onbaord at launch? (Surely so after the Amazon debacle). It's all good.

Pre-announcing is about killing the competition's Xmas selling season

As I noted in the analysis, I really think the pre-announcement was about answering the question, "But how do I get movies from my computer to my TV?" more than freezing the competition for Christmas. But good strategies often have other favorable consequences as well, so maybe it was a two-pronged attack. We'll have to see.
As I noted later, BTW, I don't think this is Apple's final product for the living room; it's simply one to accommodate legacy TVs. Expect them to do a more thorough system design as their real entry.
Thanks for all the great thoughts!
Carl
