Your comments are dead on Carl. Coming from an organization where "death by Powerpoint" is a hourly occurrence, I can appreciate your perspective. Bad habits in Powerpoint presentation creation are tough to break especially when creating a deck by committee. The executive parachute slide always seems inevitable. Perhaps a better model has not been found because it's too daunting for 15 or 50 different constituents to collectively create a cohesive set of thoughts.

You might want to correct the following:
====================
Why do I say this? Because I've did hundreds of presentations using PowerPoint as an analyst and always dreaded the experience of creating the slides.
====================
"I've did" should be "I've done".
Good article, though.

Regarding the first comment above, this whole question of what constitutes a good presentation is an area that we do a lot of work in. Many of our clients bring us in specifically to help people improve their presentations and presentation skills.
The tool we use to help people with that is an objective methodology we developed that scores a presentation in 8 different categories of communication. Since the tool generates a score, it helps separate the presentation content from the presenter, who often has a lot of ego invested in it. We don't tell the presenter that they are a bad presenter -- we tell them that the presentation only scores 15 out of 100 points. And with a consistent way to measure performance, people who work with us find it easier to improve their performance.

I'm curious why Visio isn't part of the discussion?
