Actually, the Zune is #75 on the top 10 best selling electronic products of any kind. Zune is #18 when you look at MP3 Players only. And, if you look at hard-drive based MP3 players, the Zune is a respectable #5, beating out the white 80GB iPod.
That's the black Zune outselling the white 80GB iPod that costs $100 more. The brown and white Zunes, which are cheaper, are not even in the top 100 electronics.
The black 30GB iPod is #2 and the white 30GB iPod is at #25.
By the way, Carl, the black Creative Zen Vision:M 30GB is ahead of the Zune.
Thanks for all the comments. You should know, however, that the list is continuously updated every hour, so the rankings you see may not be the same ones I saw.
You are right, though; the more constrained the category, the higher the Zune ranks. So, for example, in the category of players compatible with the Zune Marketplace, my guess is that Zune would rank #1. That's why I led off the piece noting that iPods are 5 out of the top 10 best-selling products in all electronics; that's actually more impressive than the fact that Apple holds 8 out of the top 10 MP3 players, since the iPods are competing with other hot products such as digital cameras -- and beating them.
Still, keep those cards and letters coming to keep me honest. A lot of the time I'm reading these articles at 5 and 6 am, so I don't always see everything I should.
