My take on this situation is that the uber-analysts (Forrester/Gartner) have lost the ability to accurately predict technology change - because they too heavily rely on data. They made a headline story out of a poor extrapolation of purchase data - without taking other relevant data points, and other nuances of the market into consideration. The implication was that digital music is a fad. Oh sh**- I just sold my record player! Nonsense.
