You are ignoring the kicker, Variable Pricing. The question is: will iTunes customers pay MORE for DRM free MP3s from Amazon than for Fairplay protected AACs from iTunes?
The other thing you're ignoring is the iTunes buying experience. No need to crank up the browser; no need to move files around from, say, your Downloads folder into whatever tool you're using to manage your music.
Click on "Add to Cart", then click on "Buy Songs in Cart".
Done. Downloaded. Added to your iTunes library. All in a simple two-step process.
Amazon would have to somehow come up with an answer to that.
