By the way, Machiavelli would have been excellent reading for any President who actually reads. One can come to understand the dangers of hired mercenaries (Blackwater). Back on topic, I think Gates and Jobs read "The Prince" differently: "It is better to be feared than loved." Gates went for the fear thing; Steve went for the "love"-- not for him personally, but for the products. Gates does not irritate me because he's a ruthless monopolist; he irritates me because his market position makes his universally awful products difficult to avoid.
